PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Merle Roman (ranked 25064 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Dukes (ranked 7281 p4p, 0 weight class). David Dukes told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Merle Roman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, David Dukes!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Paulsen Ambrosius and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dukes throws a head kick that misses.
Dukes looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Roman closes the distance and clinches.

Dukes manages to break the clinch.

Roman gets tackled into the cage by Dukes. Dukes maintains the clinch.

Roman escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Dukes throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The fight stays on the outside here - Roman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Dukes pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Dukes misses with a leg kick
and Roman counters with a two punch combo.
Roman tries to clinch but Dukes moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dukes throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Dukes doesn't manage to clinch there - Roman circles away.
David Dukes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Roman moves into range and clinches up with Dukes.
Roman lands a body shot in the clinch.
Roman is struggling to control the position.

Roman manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Roman's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Dukes tries to free his leg and advance position but Roman is retaining full guard.
Roman is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Dukes is controlling him.

Roman seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Roman counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Dukes thinking.

Roman drives through and clinches with Dukes against the cage.

Roman successfully pulls guard.
Roman pulls Dukes in close to prevent any damage.
Dukes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roman has his hands on Dukes's head, controlling the position.
Dukes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Roman is proving hard to escape from.
Roman is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Roman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dukes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dukes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back.

Roman looking for a guillotine here but Dukes defends easily.

Roman tries to clinch but Dukes is having none of it.

Dukes throws a chopping leg kick but Roman manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Roman throws a quick counter head kick but Dukes was just out of range.
Both fighters circling a little - Dukes finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

The fight stays on the outside here - Roman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Roman is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Dukes can do to turn this around?

Dukes has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Roman clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Dukes is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Roman defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
Roman looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Roman really must keep his cool here. He's controlling one of Dukes's hands and whilst he does that, he's got a chance of escaping the position.

Merle Roman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Roman trying to control the action but Dukes just sinks the hooks in.

Roman is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Dukes gets his way!

Dukes is trying to stick to Roman's back but Roman is turning into Dukes. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Dukes's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Roman.

Dukes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Dukes is fighting to break Roman's control of his arms but Roman is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dukes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Dukes's coach down at Cheese Factory was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Dukes's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Roman jumps guard and drags Dukes to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Roman keeping moving, preventing Dukes from controlling successfully.
Roman has Dukes pulled in close to control his posture.
Dukes takes a decent strike to the side of the head.

Roman is looking for a triangle but Dukes pushes his legs off easily.
Roman has control of Dukes's left arm, preventing Dukes from doing any damage.
Dukes wants to pass the guard but Roman is keeping the position.
Roman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Roman swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Dukes is trying to trip Roman. He has hold of a leg but Roman is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Dukes persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Roman pulls Dukes in to control the position.
Roman has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Roman.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Dukes wants to control from the top but Roman keeps moving.

And that's the end of the fight!
Merle Roman showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Roman has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
