Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Riley Abbott! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Daeng Rurung! The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Topper Green and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rurung pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rurung shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rurung showed some decent athleticism there. Rurung passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Abbott! Abbott is trying desperately to improve position. Rurung with shots to the head and body - Abbott looks very uncomfortable down there. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rurung has control of Abbott's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Abbott regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rurung is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Abbott can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rurung blocks Abbott's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Abbott throwing hammer fists to the chest of Rurung. What's that going to do exactly? Rurung is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Abbott to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Abbott shrugs it off. Rurung can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Abbott is looking to escape. Abbott tries to hold on but Rurung pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rurung sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Abbott throwing hammer fists to the chest of Rurung. What's that going to do exactly? Rurung quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Rurung but it's paid off an Abbott is forced to tap! Nice work by Rurung.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Daeng Rurung! In his post fight interview, Daeng Rurung started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
