The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matusov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Fitzgerald to the mat! Fitzgerald manages to get full guard.
Matusov pushes down on Fitzgerald's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Fitzgerald really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Matusov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Fitzgerald is looking for a sweep. Matusov is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Fitzgerald is not content to let Matusov control the position.
Matusov is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Fitzgerald has managed to free his arm - good work.
Fitzgerald felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Matusov is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Matusov wants to take a breather but Fitzgerald is having none of it.
Matusov is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Matusov is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Fitzgerald has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Matusov works his way to his opponent's back.
Matusov is persistently looking for the submission but Fitzgerald is defending it well.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Matusov is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Fitzgerald defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
