Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Viera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Murilo Rua!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Viera. No joy for Rua on that attempt.
Viera looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
A combination from Viera does no damage.
Viera throws a right and a left that both miss.
Viera tries to close the distance and clinch but Rua swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Viera doesn't manage to clinch there - Rua circles away.
Thiago Viera seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rua circles away from the clinch attempt.

Rua drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Rua thows a big elbow that misses.

Rua drops back looking for a leg! Viera is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Viera manages to kick Rua off! Rua jumps back into Viera's guard.
Rua trying to control the position from guard on top but Viera is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rua cracks Viera with a solid left hand.

Rua drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rua jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Viera avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Rua postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Viera keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Viera tries to clinch there but Rua circles away.

Rua darts in and clinches Viera up against the cage.
Rua lands an elbow inside that Viera shrugs off.
Rua lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Rua tries to work over Viera's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Viera could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rua lands an elbow inside.
Rua lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Rua lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Rua lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Viera blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Rua turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Rua tries for a kimura but Viera is defending well.
Rua creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rua landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Rua scoring with punches and elbows.
Viera taking punishment in the form of punches.

Rua is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Viera is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Viera knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rua on the ground.

Rua tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rua postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rua working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Viera is working to avoid the ground and pound but Rua connects with a decent elbow.
Rua landing a few strikes.
Rua cracks Viera with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Rua trying to control the action but Viera is working from the bottom.
Rua lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.

Rua has hold of Viera's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Viera seems comfortable defending it but Rua has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Viera is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Viera is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Rua couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Murilo Rua!
