PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hector Davis (ranked 2619 p4p, 372 weight class) and Jako Day (ranked 1675 p4p, 255 weight class). Davis comes to the cage accompanied by In to Deep. Jako Day will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hector Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jako Day!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Yves DeLean and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Davis throws a lazy uppercut
and Day counters with a stiff right hand.
Davis swings widly with a right hand
and Day counters with a straight right hand.
Day thumps Davis with a low kick.
Day will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Day throws a one two combo.

Davis rushes Day and presses him up against the cage.
Davis has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Davis keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Day's efforts to push away.
Davis creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Day's defenses.


It looks like Jako Day has been cut.
Day wants to get back to striking at distance but Davis won't allow it.
Day wants to break the clinch but can't.
A head punch on the inside from Day fails to land.
Day looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Davis drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Day gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Day can't break the clinch.
Day is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Davis looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Day missing with knees to the body.

Davis pulls guard effortlessly.
Day trying to control the position from guard on top but Davis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Day might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Davis haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Day stays in close to Davis's body and controls the position.
Day trying to control but Davis is working from the bottom.

Davis has his foot on Day's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Day works his way back into a safe position though.

Davis has his hands on Day's head, controlling the position.
Day trying to control but Davis is working from the bottom.
Day looking to sit in guard and control but Davis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Day is looking to stand up but Davis isn't so interested in that idea.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Davis accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Davis scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Day tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Davis might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Davis stands up over Day, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Davis trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Davis postures up.
Day wants to stand up but Davis is controlling him.

Davis trying to control the position from guard on top but Day is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Day is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Day is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Davis is controlling him.
Davis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Davis clinches up against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davis makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.


That has opened up Jako Day's cut even more.
Davis jumps guard but Day turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Jako Day's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Davis throws a body shot but no joy.

Davis scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Day bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Day throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Davis.
Day scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Day lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Day misses with a double jab

and Davis counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Davis is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Day looks like he's trying to stand up.

Davis is looking for a kimura here.
Day is trying to stand up here but Davis is controlling him well.

Day is trying to maintain the position but Davis is very close to passing his half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Day is positioning himself well to prevent Davis advancing to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Day regains full guard. Nicely done.
Davis is fighting to break Day's control of his arms but Day is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Davis is looking to work some ground and pound but Day has wrist control.
Davis has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Davis drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Davis jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Day pulls Davis in to control the position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Day is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Day is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Davis stays in close to Day's body and controls the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Day misses with a wild body shot.
Day works Davis's body with a nice hook.
Day moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Davis moves to clinch but Day breaks away
and Day counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Day misses with a series of wild punches.
Day pushes Davis away with a front kick.

Davis swings away with a body shot that misses
and Day counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Day lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Day jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Davis has his takedown stuffed
and Day counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Davis takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Day throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Davis has managed to clinch.

Day escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Day looks to land a combination. Davis sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Jako Day is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Davis shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Day but Day pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Davis scores with a hook to the body. Day takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Davis checks the leg kick.
Day defending well as Davis loads up on a big left hand.
Day throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Davis.
Davis is looking to counter the offense by Day and move into the clinch.
Day works the jab nicely.
Day chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Davis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Day as he jumps to the side.
Day looks like he wants to counter punch here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hector Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Davis is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Day's half guard.
Day tries to kick Davis off in order to stand up. Davis Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jako Day showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Day avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Day dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Day is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
A slow jab from Day misses its intended target.
Davis slips a jab and a cross from Day.
Day takes a swing at Davis's ribcage but misses.
The fighters circling - Davis throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Jako Day seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Davis feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Davis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Day is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Day throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Davis drops down looking for a counter takedown but Day sprawls and moves away.

Davis has managed to clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Day tries to break free but Davis pushes him back against the cage.

Day pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Decent striking displayed by Day there.
Day connects with a single shot there.
Day misses with a two punch combination.

Davis takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Davis doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Davis ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Davis moves forwards but Day connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Davis avoids a punch combination nicely.
Day throws a right and a left that both miss.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Davis looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Davis takes one to the side of the head.
Day lands the left hand.

Davis scores with a nice right hand.
Day misses with the combination.
Davis fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Day manages to avoid it.
Day goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Davis fails in his attempt to clinch.
Day throws a looping overhand right but Davis ducks down to avoid it.

Day tries to keep at a distance but Davis has taken the fight into the clinch.

Day breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Day throws a poor cross that misses

so Davis counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Day trying to keep a closed guard but Davis is proving a slippery customer.

Davis working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Day's head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Day is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Well, if Davis is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Day pushes Davis off looking to stand but Davis dives back in and keeps control.
Davis is thwarting Day's attempts to control the position.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Davis seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Day does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Davis is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Day has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Day is looking to improve his position.
Day tries to kick Davis off but Davis keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Jako Day comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Day has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
