Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gap Turner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Frank Smith! The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Nard Betker and Daniel Blasius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Turner slips a straight right by Smith. Turner changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Turner lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
It looks like Frank Smith has been cut. Turner rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Smith moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Smith tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Turner manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Turner. Smith lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected. Turner lands a jab to the nose. Gap Turner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A swing and a miss from Turner. A combination from Smith does no damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Turner looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well. Smith throws a counter combo. Turner shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Smith is looking for the big counter here. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gap Turner. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smith fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Smith tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
That's one minute gone in the round. Turner looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. As Turner backs off Smith throws a huge counter combo but Turner manages to avoid it all. Nice uppercut there from Turner. Smith stuffs the takedown attempt from Turner. Turner gets slowly back to his feet. Turner closes this distance looking for a takedown but Smith circles away. Smith unleashes a big counter combination but Turner bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Turner shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Frank Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Turner dives in for a single leg takedown but Smith sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Smith pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Smith misses with a combination
and Turner counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Turner thows a huge punch but Smith dodges it nicely.
Smith keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith has hold of Turner's hands but Turner slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Smith is looking for a sweep. Turner is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Smith is staying active underneath Turner, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Smith gets back to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action! Turner wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving. Turner postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Turner content to stall in guard here. Turner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Turner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Turner throws a big elbow that misses. Turner landing with the ground and pound. Turner wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving. Turner wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position. Turner scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Smith controls Turner momentarily but Turner frees himself. Smith keeping moving, preventing Turner from controlling successfully.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Turner doesn't succeed with the takedown and Smith counters with a series of strikes. Turner will be more careful next time no doubt. Turner doesn't succeed with the takedown letting Smith counter with a right hand. Turner drives through with a takedown into Smith's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Turner trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Turner throws a strike but Smith rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Smith must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Smith wants to pass the guard but Turner is keeping the position. Turner looking to control.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Turner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith wants to stand but Turner has a closed guard, so he can't escape. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Frank Smith will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Frank Smith's cut. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Turner shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smith but Smith pushes him off and we're back to square one. Turner blocks a head kick by Smith.
Turner fails with a takedown attempt. Turner shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Turner was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Smith explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there! Turner scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Turner scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Turner throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Nice strikes from Turner there. Turner is stalling here. Smith is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Turner seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Smith has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Turner is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
