Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sebastian Halstenberg! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Arthur Menezes! The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Summer Carpenter and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Menezes darts in looking for a takedown but Halstenberg gets double underhooks and turns Menezes into the cage. Halstenberg ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Menezes is looking to take this fight into the clinch. It looked like Halstenberg wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Menezes misses with a takedown and Halstenberg connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Menezes doesn't succeed with the takedown enabling Halstenberg to counter with a crisp jab. Sebastian Halstenberg has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arthur Menezes. No luck with that takedown attempt from Menezes. Halstenberg is looking to counter punch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Menezes scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Menezes tries for a kimura but Halstenberg is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Menezes working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Menezes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Halstenberg is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Halstenberg is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Returning Pride that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Menezes is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Halstenberg is trying to escape and Menezes transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Halstenberg is forced to tap! Nice work there by Menezes! Very nice indeed!
