Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Randall Benson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shamal Weddy! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Joseph Jones and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A punch combination from Benson misses. Weddy looks like he wants to counter punch here. Weddy gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Benson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Benson gets to his feet - Weddy follows without any prompting. Weddy connects with a high kick.
It looks like Randall Benson has been cut. Benson takes a shot right to the bread basket. Some wild striking there from Weddy.
Benson is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Weddy. Weddy tries a head kick but it misses.
Benson dives in and scores a takedown into Weddy's guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Benson throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Weddy works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Benson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benson is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Weddy is trying to control the position but Benson postures up. Benson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Weddy wants to stand and escape but Benson is having none of it. Weddy can't keep his opponent in guard - Benson advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Benson uses his free foot to push down on Weddy's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Weddy. Weddy in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
It looks like Shamal Weddy has been cut. Benson scores with a couple of good head shots there.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Benson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Benson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Weddy is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Benson controlling from mount. Weddy looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Benson lands strikes to the head. Benson tightening his grip on Weddy, looking for the choke. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Benson has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Randall Benson dominated that round. Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval. That's time! Back to the action!
Benson closes the distance and clinches. Weddy keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Benson's efforts to push away. Benson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Weddy can do to turn this around? Weddy has had enough of the clinch but Benson keeps him there for the moment. Benson has Weddy pressed against the cage, preventing Weddy from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Weddy wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Benson has him pressed against the cage. Weddy is trying to push Benson away but Benson has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Weddy can't break the clinch.
Weddy pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Weddy throws a head kick but Benson moves out of range.
A head kick misses from Weddy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Benson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Weddy's half guard. Benson slows the pace down in half guard. Weddy avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Benson.

If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Benson working Weddy over with strikes. Weddy is breathing heavily. Weddy tries to kick Benson off but Benson keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Benson with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Benson is working for a submission of some sort.
Randall Benson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Benson decides to return to a standing position. Weddy connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Weddy throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. As Weddy looks to move away, Benson throws a big counter combo but Weddy just gets out of the way. The fight stays on the outside here - Benson looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Weddy throws a predictable looking body shot
and Benson counters with a single leg into guard. Weddy didn't expect that. Benson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Benson forces his way into half guard. Benson perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Benson seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Benson slows the pace down in half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Benson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Weddy looks like he's trying to stand up.
Benson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Benson is working for a kimura but Weddy is defending it quite comfortably.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Benson working over Weddy with some ground and pound. Weddy looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Benson shoots in for a takedown. Oh, that's a huge slam! Weddy is on queer street and Benson is pounding down on him with a barage of strikes. The ref is forced to step in and stop the fight. Great finish!
