Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Darryl Frank! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Victor Mendez! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Sosuke Kotani and Ren Mimura.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendez clinches with his opponent.
Frank is trying to pull guard but Mendez turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch. Mendez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Frank moves into the clinch. Frank controlling the action here for a moment.
Mendez looking to slow down the pace here. Frank successfully pulls guard.
Frank really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Mendez postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Frank has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Frank pushes Mendez off and scrambles back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendez darts in looking for a takedown but Frank gets double underhooks and turns Mendez into the cage. Mendez shoots in for a double leg but Frank sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Frank changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Mendez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Frank wants to clinch up but Mendez keeps it at a distance. Frank has taken the fight to the clinch.
Frank jumps guard and drags Mendez to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Frank is looking for a triangle but Mendez pushes his legs off easily.
Frank lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Frank missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Frank is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Mendez is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Mendez has escaped and now he's on top!
Mendez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Mendez stopping the sweep attempt from Frank. Mendez trying to control the position from guard on top but Frank is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Mendez is standing up over Frank. Frank looks to escape but Mendez dives into side control.

Mendez trying to control the position but Frank is working away. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Frank struggling a bit here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Mendez wants to control but Frank is keeping him busy. Frank wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! You can see the frustration on Frank's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Mendez shoots in but no luck this time. Mendez forces Frank back against the cage and clinches. Frank tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Mendez smiles and moves away.

Darryl Frank overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Frank looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Mendez wants to control from the top but Frank keeps moving. Mendez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Frank swivels though and keeps the full guard. Mendez trying to control but Frank is working from the bottom. Frank tries to strike from the bottom.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Frank holds on and takes a little breather.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Frank's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Mendez scoring with some ground and pound. Frank preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Frank is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mendez is aware though and is defending well. Frank keeping full guard, as Mendez tries to pass. Mendez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Mendez lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Mendez.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendez throws a wild body kick that Frank sees coming a mile off. Frank was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. Mendez moves into range and clinches up with Frank. Mendez tries for a takedown. No joy.

Frank will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Mendez up against the cage. Frank is trying to stall.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Mendez closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mendez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Frank keeps working. Mendez working away. Frank is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Mendez is controlling him well. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Frank tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Mendez presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount! Mendez controlling the position easily from mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Victor Mendez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

He has the arm isolated but Mendez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Frank scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Mendez to see if he's OK. Frank landing a few strikes. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mendez is trying to buck Frank off. Frank working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendez is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Frank wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mendez keeps working. Mendez is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Frank scores with a couple of nice shots. Mendez is trying to stand up here but Frank is controlling him well. Mendez keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Frank slips a nice elbow through Mendez's hands, connecting with Mendez's forehead. Frank throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Frank working over Mendez with some ground and pound. Mendez looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Frank is looking to take a break and control but Mendez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Frank has hold of Mendez's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Mendez tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Frank cranks the arm and Mendez screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Mendez, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
