PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rashad Maines (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rashad Maines!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kevin Smith!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Maines but Maines pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Maines as he jumps to the side.
No joy there for Maines, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but Maines shows good takedown defense.
Rashad Maines has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kevin Smith.
Maines doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Smith counters with a left to the body.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt

and Maines counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Smith's guard now.
Smith looks gassed!
Maines sitting in guard here, content to control.
Smith preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Maines has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Maines connects with a couple of short punches.
Maines wanted to stand there but Smith had control of the position.

Maines slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Maines has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Smith looking for a sweep. Not yet Smith, not yet.
Smith looking to control.
Maines is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Smith is trying to control the position but Maines postures up.
Maines slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Maines decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smith, up you get!
Smith tries for a takedown but Maines circles away easily

and Maines holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Maines pulls guard successfully.
Smith wants to control from the top but Maines keeps moving.

Maines has his feet on Smith's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Maines looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Smith trying to get back to full guard but Maines takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Smith is working to get back to half guard.
Maines looking to control and managing it successfully.
Smith is desperately trying to improve his position but Maines has a good base and remains in mount.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Maines takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Rashad Maines just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

and Smith holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Smith trying to control but Maines is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Maines is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Smith wants to control from the top but Maines keeps moving.
Smith is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Maines drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Smith tries to buck Maines off but Maines is having none of it.
Smith throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Maines just content to control the position.
Smith is trying to control Maines's posture but Maines avoids it.
Smith is being controlled here.
Smith struggling a bit here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maines is trying to get an arm triangle but Smith is defending well.
Smith is looking for a sweep.
What's Smith going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.

Maines wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well.
Maines happy to just control the position for now.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Smith tries to bench press Maines off him but Maines keeps the position.
Smith is trying to escape the position but Maines is controlling the position.

Maines decides to stand back up.

Smith decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith slows the pace down in half guard.
Smith trying to control from half guard but Maines is working away.
Smith misses with a head shot. Maines uses the momentum to regain guard.
Maines pulls Smith in close to prevent any damage.

Smith wants to control from the top but Maines keeps moving.
Maines wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Maines is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Smith postures up in Maines's guard and throws a big left but Maines blocks it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt

and Maines counters by moving into the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Smith misses with a short punch on the inside.

Maines jumps guard.
Maines pulls Smith in to control the position.
Maines wants to sweep but no luck.
Smith pushing down on Maines's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Maines wants to get back to full guard.
Smith trying to control the action but Maines is working from the bottom.
Maines trying to control but Smith postures up.
Smith not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Maines avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Smith.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Maines gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Smith tries to bum rush Maines with a series of wild strikes but Maines uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Maines, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
