Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Robert Hongo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sam Roberts! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Sergei Dronov and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Roberts swings away with a body shot that misses
and Hongo counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Roberts manages to escape and get back to his feet! Roberts throws an off balance right hand
and Hongo counters with a nice double leg into guard. Hongo throws a big right hand that misses. Hongo thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Hongo drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Roberts dives on top into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action! Roberts tries to stand but Hongo is controlling from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hongo pulls Roberts in close to prevent any damage. Roberts wants to get up but he can't break Hongo's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Hongo has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Roberts must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Hongo has his feet on Roberts's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. Roberts throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Hongo counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Roberts! Hongo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Roberts knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roberts tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops. Hongo looking for the choke but no joy. Roberts trying to get back to his feet but Hongo is in full control for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Hongo has both hooks in and is working for a choke. Roberts is in real trouble here. Hongo gets an arm under the chin and tightens the submission attempt... is this the end? Yes, Roberts is tapping out! Hongo wins by rear naked choke!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Robert Hongo!
