PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Lucas Barber (ranked 25367 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hank Doss (ranked 5377 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lucas Barber!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hank Doss!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barber looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Doss pushes Barber up against the cage in a clinch.
Barber displaying some good clinch control by pressing Doss up against the cage.
Barber jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Doss walks away with a smile on his face. Barber gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Doss throws a sloppy head kick and Barber moves out of range easily.

Doss bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Doss taking a break here but Barber is having none of it and regains half guard.
Barber trying to control here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barber is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Doss keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Barber is trying to maintain the position but Doss is very close to passing his half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Barber is looking for a sweep. Doss is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Doss not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Barber is looking to escape.
Barber won't allow Doss to pass to mount.
Doss sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Barber defending well though.
Barber keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Doss scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Barber has Doss up against the cage in a clinch.
Barber is pushing Doss up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Doss manages to pull guard.
Doss trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Doss avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Barber scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Barber throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Doss works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Doss looking to control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Doss utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Barber landing some decent shots from guard.
Barber knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Doss on the ground.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Barber working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Doss not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Doss looking for a sweep. Not yet Doss, not yet.
Doss looks winded!
Barber throws a big elbow that misses.

Doss is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Barber landing some decent shots from guard.

Barber throwing strikes but missing.
Doss has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Barber scoring with some ground and pound.
Barber cracks Doss with a solid left hand.
Doss has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Doss has his foot on Barber's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barber works his way back into a safe position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Barber connects with a couple of short punches.
Barber postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Lucas Barber will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!



Doss closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Barber to the mat! Barber manages to get full guard.

Barber has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Doss off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Barber lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Doss.

Barber sneaks out the side door and pushes Doss away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Barber enables Doss to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Barber manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Barber has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Doss is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Doss is breathing heavily.

Barber has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Doss uses from the top position.

Barber is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Doss defends well.
Barber trying to keep a closed guard but Doss is proving a slippery customer.

Doss decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Barber fails in his attempt to clinch.
Doss tries to counter with a clinch but Barber shakes him off and moves away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Doss lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Barber doesn't manage to clinch there - Doss circles away.
Doss cracks Barber with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Doss changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Barber looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Barber wants to get back to his feet.

Doss thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Barber is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Barber is trying to escape the position but Doss is controlling the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Doss shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Barber napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Doss works to advance to full mount. Barber defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Barber is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Doss postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Barber looks a forlorn figure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barber really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Doss looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Doss sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Lucas Barber will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Barber shoots in looking for a takedown but Doss manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Barber's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Barber looks for the body kick but Doss saw that one coming.
A head kick misses from Doss.

Doss fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Barber to the ground. Doss is now in Barber's guard.

Doss trying to control but Barber is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barber is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Barber working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Barber in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Doss tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Barber!
