PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frik Van Wyk (ranked 8318 p4p, 524 weight class) and Tomas Sobrino (ranked 8353 p4p, 525 weight class). Van Wyk comes into the arena with Ska-Rumba blaring out of the sound system. Tomas Sobrino will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Frik Van Wyk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tomas Sobrino! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Donald Grub and Daniel Bishop.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Sobrino, as that shot connected.
Sobrino throws a head kick that misses and Van Wyk counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Van Wyk. Van Wyk landing some decent shots from guard. Van Wyk looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Van Wyk definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Van Wyk lands a couple of elbows. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Van Wyk controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Van Wyk seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sobrino for as long as he can get away with.
That's one minute gone in the round. Van Wyk postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Van Wyk stands up over Sobrino, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Van Wyk advances position into side control! Sobrino looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Sobrino is being controlled here. Van Wyk is working to tighten his grip on Sobrino's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Sobrino has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Van Wyk is really squeezing tight and eventually Sobrino passes out! Van Wyk breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Frik Van Wyk! An out of breath Frik Van Wyk thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
