Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Curt Barber! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Curtis Choi! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Seu Braga and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barber pushes Choi up against the cage in a clinch. Barber is trying to push Choi away but Choi has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Barber jumps guard but Choi stands there with Barber around his waist. Barber gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Barber wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Choi has him pressed against the cage. Barber could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Barber's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Choi closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Barber did well to prevent Choi getting side control. Barber desperately trying to maintain half guard. Choi is pressing down on Barber's thigh, looking to free his foot. Barber is holding on for now. Choi looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Choi takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
That's one minute gone in the round. Choi is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Choi sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Choi wants to control the pace but Barber is squirming around nicely. Choi is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Barber has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Barber wants to get back to his feet.
Barber is squirming around, avoiding Choi's attempts to control the action. Barber might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Choi prevents Barber from getting the reversal.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Barber is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Choi wants to control the pace but Barber is squirming around nicely. Barber wants to hold on but Choi pushes him away. Choi sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Choi lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Barber hang on? Barber is working to get back to half guard.
Choi stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing. Barber gets a double leg takedown into Choi's guard. Barber working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Choi's head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Choi managing to control the position. Choi had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Barber defends it easily. Choi is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Barber presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. Choi prevents Barber from breaking the clinch. Barber escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Choi scores with a takedown into Barber's guard. Barber trying to keep a closed guard but Choi is proving a slippery customer.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Choi slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Barber looking to control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Choi thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Choi looking to pass the guard. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Curtis Choi dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Barber enables Choi to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Barber manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Barber is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. Barber pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Choi scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. This has been an exciting period of action! Barber is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Choi asserts his dominance and retains side control. Curtis Choi has got the better of the ground game so far. A lull in the action here. Choi works to advance to full mount. Barber defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Choi landing shots from mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Choi can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Barber is looking to escape. Choi is standing up, even though he is in mount. Barber is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Choi dives into side control.
Barber is trying to buck Choi off. You can see the frustration on Barber's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Choi wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Barber, who protects the arm well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Choi has hold of Barber's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Barber seems comfortable defending it but Choi has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Barber is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Barber is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Choi couldn't care less - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:09 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Curtis Choi!
