The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nine will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Whelan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Nine swats him away and circles back towards the center. Nine could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Nine gets the takedown into side control. Nine trying to control the position but Whelan is working away. Nine tries for a kimura but Whelan is defending well. Nine wants to lay and pray for a moment but Whelan keeps working. Whelan is trying to improve his position. Whelan is trying to control Nine's posture but Nine avoids it.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Whelan has managed to clinch.
Whelan manages to break the clinch.
Nine tries for a takedown but Whelan sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Whelan sizes up Nine with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
It looks like Resial Nine has been cut. Whelan moves into range and connects with a jab. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Nine uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Whelan. A slow jab from Whelan misses its intended target. Whelan throws a nice looking combination but Nine bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Nine scores with a takedown into Whelan's guard. Nine wants to control from the top but Whelan keeps moving. Whelan has his hands on Nine's head, controlling the position. Nine works a leg free and moves into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nine is looking to advance position but Whelan won't allow it. Whelan tries to get to full guard but Nine has control of the leg. Whelan trying to control here.
Nine is pressing down on Whelan's thigh, looking to free his foot. Whelan is holding on for now. Nine works his way into side control. Whelan tries to buck Nine off but Nine is having none of it. Nine tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Whelan controls the position for a moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nine trying to control the action but Whelan is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Whelan is looking to regain half guard here but Nine keeps moving and retains side control. Nine wants to control but Whelan is keeping him busy. Nine looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Nine is trying to ground and pound but Whelan uses the momentary lack of control by Nine to regain half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Whelan is controlling Nine's position as best he can from this difficult position. Nine is working for a submission of some sort.

Nine wants to pass the guard but Whelan is defending well. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Nine thows a huge punch but Whelan dodges it nicely.
Whelan looks like he's trying to stand up.
Whelan avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Nine. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Matthew Whelan dominated that round. The cut man is working on Resial Nine's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Nice shot by Whelan. Nine shoots for a double leg takedown but Whelan sprawls well. He's pushed Nine's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Whelan doesn't manage to clinch there - Nine circles away.
Nine shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Nine was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Whelan wants to hold on but Nine pushes him away. Whelan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nine. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Whelan is desperately trying to improve his position but Nine has a good base and remains in mount. Whelan looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Nine has the hooks in. Whelan is starting to panic. He's trying to push off one of the legs but he's left his neck open to attack. Nine passes his arm under Whelan's neck and tightens up a rear naked choke! This one is surely all over! Yes, Whelan taps!
