PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Braydon Patel (ranked 5254 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paulo Costa (ranked 5325 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Braydon Patel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Paulo Costa!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Sandra Marshall and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice straight punches there by Patel. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Patel.

Patel closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Costa's guard.
Patel tries to stand but Costa is controlling from the bottom.
Patel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Costa swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Costa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Patel controls the pace.
Costa managing to control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patel wants to control from the top but Costa keeps moving.

Patel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Costa swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Patel throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Costa looking to hit a scissor sweep but Patel is one step ahead there.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Patel is defended easily by Costa.
Patel shoots for a takedown but Costa saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Despite the aggression on Costa's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Patel closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Costa did well to prevent Patel getting side control.
Costa wants to improve his position but Patel is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Patel content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Costa wants to improve his position but Patel is controlling well.

Patel stands up out of the half guard.
Patel misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Costa lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Costa takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Patel gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Costa breaks from the clinch.
Costa lands with a kick to the temple. Patel shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Costa tries to clinch but Patel moves out of range.

Patel shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Costa is trying to defend but Patel finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Patel is breathing heavily.
Patel thows a huge punch but Costa dodges it nicely.
Costa controlling the position well.

Costa wants to get back to full guard.
Patel wants to stand but Costa has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Costa is looking for a sweep. Patel is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Patel takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Costa wants to get back to his feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Braydon Patel will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Patel's jab looks to have found its range, popping Costa under the eye.
Costa takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Nice takedown defense from Costa. No joy for Patel on that attempt.

Patel darts in and clinches Costa up against the cage.
Patel is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Costa pulls Patel into guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Patel is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Patel thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Patel wants to control from the top but Costa keeps moving.

Costa is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Costa breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Patel tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Costa throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Braydon Patel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Patel tries to clinch up but Costa circles away and keeps his distance.
Costa wants to counter with a clinch but Patel pushes him away.

Patel has Costa up against the cage in a clinch.
Patel has had enough of the clinch but Costa keeps him there for the moment.

Costa breaks from the clinch.
Patel tries to close the distance and clinch up but Costa swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Costa gets control of Patel's arms and successfully pulls guard. Costa will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Costa uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Costa digs a good hook to Patel's body.
Patel is trying hard to land a takedown here. Costa sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Costa tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Patel swivels and escapes.

Costa closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Costa has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Braydon Patel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Patel rushes Costa and presses him up against the cage.

Patel jumps guard and drags Costa to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Patel looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Patel keeping moving, preventing Costa from controlling successfully.
Costa slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Costa trying to control the position from guard on top but Patel is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Paulo Costa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Patel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Costa misses with a few strikes there.
Patel tries to score a power double leg takedown but Costa sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Patel somewhat.
Patel throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Costa unleashes a big counter combination but Patel bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

Costa is looking for the big counter here.

Patel clinches with his opponent.

Costa tries to pull guard but Patel forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Costa keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Patel's efforts to push away.

Costa manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

A slapping body kick lands there for Patel.
A clash of legs there as Costa blocks the low kick.
Costa throws a one two combo.

Costa leaves Patel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Costa misses with a hook.
Patel wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Patel doesn't manage to clinch there - Costa circles away.
Patel wants to clinch.

Costa takes the fight into the clinch.

Patel misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Costa.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Costa manages to pull guard.
Costa working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Patel.
Patel won't allow Costa to sweep him here.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Patel decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Patel leaves Costa with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Patel shoots in looking for a takedown. Costa tries to sprawl out of it but Patel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Costa manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
The fight stays on the outside here - Patel looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Patel shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Patel showed some decent athleticism there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Paulo Costa comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Costa has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
