Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Austin Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Lorenzo Gilyard! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Roger Salmon and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gilyard throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Gilyard jabs Smith to the body, keeping him at a distance. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Smith lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Gilyard has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Gilyard and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. It seemed like Gilyard was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Gilyard thows a left - swing and a miss! Smith moves away from the strike by Gilyard. Smith feinted with a counter takedown. We've been hearing reports that Smith has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Gilyard scores with a jab to the jaw. Lorenzo Gilyard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Smith throws a shot from downtown. Gilyard moves away and avoids it. Oooooh!!! Gilyard has knocked Smith down with a huge combo! Gilyard steps away and waves a wobbly Smith back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!
Smith is rocked!
It looks like Austin Smith has been cut. Gilyard has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Smith is landing a low percentage of strikes. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gilyard misses with a right hand and Smith counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Oh Smith is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Smith is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Gilyard pushes Smith off looking to stand but Smith dives back in and keeps control.
Smith is working for a kimura but Gilyard is defending it quite comfortably.
Smith seems to have got his legs back now. Gilyard is trying to stand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith trying to control from half guard but Gilyard is working away. Smith is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gilyard defends it well. Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Gilyard is defending well.
Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gilyard is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Smith is looking for a kimura but Gilyard is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage. Gilyard wants to get back to his feet.
Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gilyard is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold. Smith is working for a kimura here but Gilyard manages to reverse the position and he's now in Smith's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gilyard has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Smith to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Gilyard is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Smith pulls down on the head and he's put Gilyard to sleep! This one is all over!
