Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kendo Hirigushi (ranked 507 p4p, 62 weight class) and Damen Mayer (ranked 672 p4p, 79 weight class). Kendo Hirigushi has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Kendo Hirigushi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Damen Mayer!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Eddie Farnsworth and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mayer shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hirigushi pinned against the cage. Hirigushi gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
It looked like Hirigushi wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Mayer lands a jab to the nose.
Mayer throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Hirigushi sees it coming and avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mayer fails with an attempt to clinch.
It looked like Hirigushi was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Hirigushi bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Hirigushi swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Hirigushi drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Mayer with a poor takedown
and Hirigushi counters with a stiff right hand.

Mayer misses with a wild body shot.
Mayer shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hirigushi pinned against the cage. Hirigushi gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
As Mayer looks to move away, Hirigushi throws a big counter combo but Mayer just gets out of the way.
Kendo Hirigushi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damen Mayer.

Mayer shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hirigushi as he avoids it easily.

enabling Hirigushi to counter with a crisp jab.

and Hirigushi counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Hirigushi stuffs the takedown attempt from Mayer. Mayer gets slowly back to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Hirigushi. No joy for Mayer on that attempt.

and Hirigushi counters with a series of strikes. Mayer will be more careful next time no doubt.
Mayer tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Hirigushi defends well and Mayer ends up having to push Hirigushi into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Mayer connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Hirigushi's hands.

Damen Mayer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mayer tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Hirigushi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Hirigushi definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mayer is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hirigushi doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mayer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kendo Hirigushi will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Mayer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hirigushi tries to avoid it but Mayer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hirigushi to the ground. Hirigushi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hirigushi was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Mayer misses with a body shot.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hirigushi enables Mayer to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hirigushi manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Mayer tries to free his leg and advance position but Hirigushi is retaining full guard.
Mayer throws a big elbow that misses.
Hirigushi looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mayer is one step ahead there.

Mayer clinches.
Mayer is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Hirigushi to keep the fight standing.
Hirigushi lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Mayer's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Hirigushi breaks the clinch.
Kendo Hirigushi is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Mayer dives in and scores a takedown into Hirigushi's guard.
Mayer stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hirigushi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Mayer postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Hirigushi is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mayer, into his guard.

Mayer is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hirigushi will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hirigushi wants to get up but he can't break Mayer's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

and Hirigushi counters with a crisp one two that drops Mayer! Hirigushi thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Mayer to his feet! Mayer is in big trouble!

and Hirigushi rattles Mayer with a well-timed uppercut counter. - Mayer tries to back away and recover but his hands are down low and he gets tagged again, sending him stumbling down to the canvas. Hirigushi dives in after him and quickly finishes the job with a trio of brutal punches, leaving Mayer stiff and motionless on the mat!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Kendo Hirigushi!
After the fight, Kendo Hirigushi was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
