Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 11 - 1, fighting out of London, Sam McCullen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Joe Johnson! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Paul Tew and Phil Schofield.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McCullen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Johnson to the mat! Johnson manages to get full guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth. McCullen is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. McCullen landing with the ground and pound. McCullen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Johnson has momentary wrist control but McCullen slips an elbow through the middle. McCullen throwing strikes but missing. McCullen makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Johnson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from McCullen. McCullen controls from within his opponent's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McCullen with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's one minute gone in the round. McCullen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. McCullen postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. McCullen throwing strikes from guard but Johnson blocks nicely. McCullen throws a big right hand that misses. McCullen with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. McCullen lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. McCullen is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. McCullen thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. McCullen sitting in guard here, content to control. McCullen throws a big right hand that misses. McCullen looking to control the position here, rather than advance. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice jab there from McCullen. Nice body punch from McCullen. McCullen lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. McCullen cracks Johnson with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Johnson is rocked! McCullen lands a big uppercut and this one is all over! His foe lies motionless on the canvas - a massive one punch knockout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Sam McCullen! Sam McCullen tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
