PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between CJ Tripp (ranked 3218 p4p, 386 weight class) and Fred Floyd (ranked 5342 p4p, 529 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, CJ Tripp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Fred Floyd!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Reed Andrews and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Floyd uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Tripp defending well as Floyd loads up on a big left hand.
Tripp checks a low kick from Floyd.
Floyd throws a leg kick
and Tripp cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Floyd misses with the combination.
Tripp swings for the body but Floyd moves out of range.
A low kick from Floyd misses
and Tripp counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Floyd thinking.
Floyd misses with a straight left.
Tripp looks to land a left hand but Floyd moved out of range nicely.
Floyd loads up on a big right hand but Tripp slips the punch.
Floyd throws out a leg kick but Tripp moves out of range and Floyd only half commits.
Tripp throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nice defenses there by Tripp.

Floyd will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Floyd throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Tripp lands an overhand right.
Tripp swings for the body but Floyd moves out of range.
Tripp lands a head shot.
Floyd tries to work over Tripp's front leg with a kick but Tripp checks it.
Tripp bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
A little feinted left hand from Tripp on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Tripp throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Fred Floyd seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sloppy strikes from Tripp. Those never looked like landing.
Floyd with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Tripp to score with a decent uppercut.
Tripp is looking to wear down Floyd with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Tripp misses with a double jab.
Tripp swats away the attempt to clinch by Floyd.
Tripp swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Tripp ducks under a wild hook from Floyd.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Floyd throws a low kick but Tripp avoids it.
Floyd throws out a powerful jab.
Floyd thows a left - swing and a miss!
Floyd walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Tripp checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Floyd turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Floyd misses with a low kick.
The fight stays on the outside here - Floyd looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Tripp steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Floyd.
A big left from Floyd misses.
Tripp throws a lazy right hand but Floyd sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Floyd swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Floyd shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Tripp pinned against the cage. Tripp gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Floyd throws a looping overhand right but Tripp ducks down to avoid it.
Floyd finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Tripp was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Jab, jab by Floyd - just one landing.
Floyd throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Floyd keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Floyd gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Tripp.
Floyd misses with an uppercut
and Tripp counters with a left to the body.
Tripp connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Tripp scores with a nice head shot.
Floyd throws a looping overhand right but Tripp ducks down to avoid it.
Tripp blocks a leg kick.
Tripp was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Tripp lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Floyd misses with an uppercut.
Floyd thumps Tripp with a low kick.
Tripp just misses with a punch to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Floyd ducks under a wild hook from Tripp.
Floyd moves away from the strike by Tripp.
Floyd drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Tripp defends it well.
Floyd throws a shot from downtown. Tripp moves away and avoids it.
Tripp fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Floyd throws a leg kick but Tripp sees it coming and checks it nicely.
We've been told by Tripp's head coaches at Ryōzanpaku Dojo that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
A looping hook to the body misses from Tripp. Floyd does a little dance to reset his feet.
Floyd tries to clinch up.

Floyd is rocked!
Floyd throws a lazy uppercut
and Tripp counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Floyd misses with a low kick.
Floyd tries to close the distance and clinch up but Tripp swats him away and circles back towards the center.
An attempted straight right counter from Tripp misses the target.
Tripp looks to land a right hand but Floyd moved out of range.
Floyd tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Tripp misses with an uppercut. Floyd saw that one coming.
Floyd attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Tripp throws an overhand right that lands on Floyd's shoulder, as Floyd tries to avoid the shot.
Floyd with the counter takedown but Tripp avoids it easily.
Tripp staying out of range there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

CJ Tripp dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Nice uppercut lands for Tripp. That snapped Floyd's head back.
Tripp is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Floyd can do to turn this around?

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Tripp here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
