Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mario Ribeiro! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Richards! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Alan Glass and Robert Twigg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Richards connects with the punch. Richards throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Ribeiro. Richards lands a nice shot that snaps Ribeiro's head back.
It looks like Mario Ribeiro has been cut. Richards jabbing away but nothing is landing. Ribeiro looks for a takedown but Richards sprawls well. Richards doesn't succeed with the takedown and Ribeiro counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Richards's guard now. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ribeiro tries to free his leg and advance position but Richards is retaining full guard. Richards is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ribeiro is controlling him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ribeiro trying to control but Richards is working from the bottom. Richards is trying to control the position but Ribeiro postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Richards keeping full guard, as Ribeiro tries to pass. Richards is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Ribeiro stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Richards swivels though and keeps the full guard. Richards is looking to stand up but Ribeiro isn't so interested in that idea.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Ribeiro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Richards tries to kick Ribeiro off but Ribeiro keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Ribeiro takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Ribeiro wants to control but Richards is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro wants to work for an arm triangle but Richards is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Richards pushes Ribeiro off and gets back to his feet. Richards works the jab nicely. Ribeiro showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Richards.
Ribeiro shoots and misses and Richards counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Ribeiro works his way to full guard. Good work. Richards trying to stand up but can't free himself from Ribeiro's guard. Richards looks gassed! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Richards lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro pulls Richards in close to prevent any damage. Ribeiro has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Richards can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Ribeiro wants to sweep but no luck. Ribeiro throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Richards is looking to stand up but Ribeiro won't let him. Ribeiro is looking for a triangle but Richards pushes his legs off easily.
Ribeiro pulls Richards in close to his closed guard and prevents Richards from doing any damage or advancing position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Richards tries to stand but Ribeiro is controlling from the bottom. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ribeiro is on top in guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Ribeiro advances position into side control! Ribeiro in side control, just content to control the action for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Steve Richards will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Mario Ribeiro's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Richards throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Ribeiro drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Richards is looking to stand back up but Ribeiro counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Richards. Ribeiro is looking for a kimura here.
Ribeiro is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Richards has managed to free his arm - good work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Richards wants to get back to his feet.
Richards is breathing heavily. Ribeiro is looking to take a break and control but Richards is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Ribeiro is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Richards doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ribeiro. Ribeiro is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Richards is just riding it out for now. Ribeiro eventually gives up the hold. Richards is trying to stand up here but Ribeiro is controlling him well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Ribeiro in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Richards tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Ribeiro!
