PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chrys Kyle (ranked 1075 p4p, 133 weight class) and John Brown (ranked 1223 p4p, 150 weight class). Brown has chosen Shook Ones Pt II as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. John Brown told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Trevor Gratis and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kyle throws the left hand but Brown avoids the punch easily.
Kyle looks for the body kick but Brown saw that one coming.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Brown!
Kyle throws a head kick that misses.
Brown keeps the fight on the outside.
Kyle misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Kyle connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Brown's hands.
It looks like John Brown has been cut.
A telegraphed right hand from Kyle misses the target.
Kyle tries to clinch up but Brown circles away and keeps his distance.
Brown has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Brown there as he acknowledges the shot.

We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Brown has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

I was talking to Kyle's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Kyle was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Brown changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kyle tries to avoid it but Brown manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kyle to the ground. Kyle escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Brown shoots in and bounces Kyle off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The fighters are working up against the cage. Kyle manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Kyle here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Brown is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Oooh a lovely combination from Kyle sends Brown down but not out. Kyle dives into side control looking to finish.

Chrys Kyle overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kyle has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Brown is still on wobbly legs! Can Kyle finish him?
Kyle fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Brown has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Kyle throws a jab but it's blocked by Brown.
Kyle sets himself, and Brown steps forward looking for the clinch! Kyle avoids it this time.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kyle tries to clinch but Brown is having none of it.
Brown seems to have recovered his senses.
Kyle connects with a good straight punch right through the guard and follows up with a right hook and a left hook! That last one sent Brown tumbling to the canvas! Kyle pours on the pressure with more strikes and the referee has no hesitation diving in to stop the fight! Brown was done - good stoppage!

After winning the bout, Chrys Kyle thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
