Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dennis Baker! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kasper Shaw! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Steve Montenegro and John Kavanagh.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Baker moves out of range as Shaw strikes. Shaw looks to land a body kick but Baker moved away. Baker shoots in for a takedown but Shaw shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Shaw looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Shaw has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Baker is landing a low percentage of strikes. Shaw throws a half hearted mid kick. Baker fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Shaw stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shaw wants it to stay on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dennis Baker. That's going to take a lot out of him. Shaw throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
It looks like Dennis Baker has been cut. Shaw pivots, looking for a leg kick but Baker is out of range and Shaw settles back down. Baker is looking for a counter combo. Baker closes this distance looking for a takedown but Shaw circles away. Shaw throws a combination that misses and Baker counters by moving into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Baker drags the fight down to the ground.
Shaw is looking to stand up but Baker won't let him. Shaw really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Baker. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Shaw trying to control but Baker is working from the bottom. Shaw wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Baker's closed guard. He's half up but Baker has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Baker pivots and extends the arm, Shaw falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Baker! Well done that man!
