PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Trent Alvarez (ranked 25111 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jean Rioux (ranked 5320 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Trent Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Rioux!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Steve Smith and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Rioux is able to avoid easily.
Rioux throws a body kick that misses.
Alvarez lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Rioux fails with the takedown
and Alvarez counters with a stiff right hand.

Alvarez closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rioux's guard.
Alvarez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Rioux wants to hit a switch here but Alvarez passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Rioux there!
Rioux wants to control but Alvarez is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rioux is just holding on here. Alvarez manages to take his back.
Rioux really must keep his cool here. He's controlling one of Alvarez's hands and whilst he does that, he's got a chance of escaping the position.

Rioux tries to roll but Alvarez sticks to his back.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Alvarez controlling the positon.
Rioux is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Alvarez controlling the position well here. Rioux rolled but Alvarez kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Rioux rolls, trying to escape but Alvarez keeps control of the position.

Alvarez is trying to stick to Rioux's back but Rioux is turning into Alvarez. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Alvarez's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Rioux.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Rioux looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Rioux shoots in but Alvarez avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Alvarez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Rioux is fending him off so far but Alvarez persists. Nope, Rioux circles away and we're back to standing.
Rioux shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Alvarez defends it nicely.

Alvarez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Rioux wants to get back to his feet but Alvarez passes into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rioux is trying to maintain the position but Alvarez is very close to passing his half guard.
Alvarez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Rioux is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Alvarez content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Rioux is trying to get back to full guard.

Rioux is defending against the submission attempts here by Alvarez.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Rioux tried to score with a low kick but Alvarez checks it.
Alvarez tries to land a leg kick but Rioux saw it coming and moves away.
Rioux throws a sloppy head kick and Alvarez moves out of range easily.
Alvarez misses with a body kick.
Rioux doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Alvarez counters with a nice low kick that buckles Rioux's knee momentarily.
Trent Alvarez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jean Rioux.
Rioux dives in and grabs Alvarez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Alvarez pushes down on Rioux's head and hops out.
Rioux is breathing heavily.
Rioux misses with a two punch combination.
Alvarez swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.

Alvarez slaps away a takedown attempt from Rioux, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Jean Rioux is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Alvarez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rioux is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Alvarez is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Rioux misses with a takedown attempt - Alvarez sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Rioux shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Alvarez pinned against the cage. Alvarez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Alvarez half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Alvarez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rioux can do to turn this around?
Rioux shoots in looking for a takedown. Alvarez tries to sprawl out of it but Rioux keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alvarez manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Rioux takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Rioux tries to reverse the position but Alvarez maintains control.
Alvarez pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Alvarez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Rioux is just holding on here. Alvarez manages to take his back.
Alvarez keeps control of the position easily here as Rioux tries to buck him off.
Rioux has hold of Alvarez's arm. He needs to escape this position sooner or later but for now he's happy enough to control the position and prevent the submission attempts.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
You can see the frustration on Rioux's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

I would not like to be Rioux right now.
Rioux is trying to break free.

Trent Alvarez showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Alvarez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
