PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Takanori Gomi (ranked 5762 p4p, 536 weight class) and Jason Hewitt (ranked 5424 p4p, 524 weight class). Jason Hewitt told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Takanori Gomi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jason Hewitt!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, David Hoff and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomi lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Hewitt has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Hewitt on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Hewitt fails with a takedown attempt.
Gomi ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Hewitt.
Hewitt closes the distance and clinches up with Gomi, looking for a takedown. Hewitt pushes Gomi against the cage but Gomi circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Takanori Gomi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason Hewitt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hewitt displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Gomi throws out the jab.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gomi wants to control but Hewitt is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Gomi definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Hewitt lands with a punch from half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hewitt slows the pace down in half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Gomi manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Hewitt looking to pass the guard.

Hewitt stays in close to Gomi's body and controls the position.
Hewitt is in close to Gomi's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Gomi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hewitt gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Gomi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hewitt can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hewitt tries to stand but Gomi is controlling from the bottom.

Hewitt trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Gomi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hewitt can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Hewitt really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gomi. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Hewitt trying to control the position from guard on top but Gomi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Hewitt slaps away a takedown attempt from Gomi, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Hewitt drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Hewitt in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Hewitt looks up at the clock and then as Gomi takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Hewitt smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomi regains half guard.
Well, if Hewitt is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Hewitt wants to take a breather but Gomi is having none of it.

Gomi wants to control but Hewitt is keeping busy.
Gomi manages to get to full guard.

Gomi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hewitt is aware though and is defending well.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hewitt's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Hewitt must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Hewitt in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Hewitt looking to sit in guard and control but Gomi gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hewitt can do anything to dispel that myth.

Gomi passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Hewitt tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Gomi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Gomi is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hewitt knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hewitt is trying to get back to half guard.
Gomi is looking to take a break and control but Hewitt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hewitt is looking to reverse the position.
Hewitt is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gomi's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Hewitt keeps control of the position for the meantime.

Jason Hewitt has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hewitt tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hewitt keeping moving, preventing Gomi from controlling successfully.

Gomi drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hewitt manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gomi has Hewitt in his guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gomi can't keep his opponent in guard - Hewitt advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Hewitt showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Gomi looks for a takedown but Hewitt sprawls well.
Hewitt shapes to counter with a head kick.
Gomi thuds his right hand into Hewitt's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Gomi shoots in but no luck this time.
Gomi misses with an uppercut. Hewitt saw that one coming.
Hewitt appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Gomi gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Hewitt decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gomi, up you get!

Gomi goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Hewitt has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Gomi but great work by Hewitt.

Gomi holds on to Hewitt's head and controls the position momentarily.

Gomi manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Gomi is looking for a kimura but Hewitt is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gomi to get the leverage.
Hewitt is looking to control Gomi's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hewitt avoid being mounted?
Hewitt is pressing down on Gomi's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Hewitt striking off his back but it's not causing Gomi any problems.
Hewitt wants to control the position but Gomi says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Gomi is thwarting Hewitt's attempts to control the position.
Hewitt tries to get to full guard but Gomi has control of the leg.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hewitt has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gomi is working away from the top position though.
Hewitt is staying active underneath Gomi, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Hewitt wants to control but Gomi is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hewitt shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gomi as he jumps to the side.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jason Hewitt.
I think Hewitt has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
