Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
24 - 16 - 1, fighting out of New York, Paul OConnell! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
25 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, HL Mencken! The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! OConnell takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards. OConnell fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Mencken on the side of the head.
It looks like HL Mencken has been cut. OConnell on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Mencken throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
HL Mencken seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A decent looking body kick lands there for Mencken. OConnell is breathing heavily. OConnell walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Mencken ducks down and throws a hook to the body but OConnell moves away. OConnell dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Mencken lands with an uppercut that bounces OConnell off the cage and back into range.
It looks like Paul OConnell has been cut. Mencken looks to land a body kick but OConnell moved away. It looked like OConnell wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. A jab from Mencken does it's job there. This has been an exciting period of action! OConnell rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Mencken moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Mencken lands a jab to OConnell's midsection.
That's one minute gone in the round. OConnell on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Mencken misses the shot to the body. It looked like OConnell wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. This fight brought to you by 5M nutrition - it's mmmmm tasty. Nice jab by Mencken. Mencken dips down and scores with a jab to the body. OConnell throws a hook but Mencken avoids it easily. Mencken lands a jab to OConnell's midsection. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! OConnell crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Mencken - the referee stops the clock and OConnell gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Mencken. OConnell manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. OConnell has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Mencken. Mencken lands a straight punch to the body, keeping OConnell at a distance.
Mencken lands a big shot that drops OConnell! Can he finish him?
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Mencken looking to control the position here, rather than advance. OConnell wants to stand and escape but Mencken is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mencken decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. OConnell throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Mencken throws a front kick that sends OConnell stumbling back into the cage. Mencken connects with a right hand. OConnell shakes it off. Mencken tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Mencken will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mencken walks forward and throws a big overhand right! OConnell drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes! Mencken swarms on him with more punches until the referee wrestles him away from OConnell's unconscious body! Wow, that was brutal!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:07 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). HL Mencken! HL Mencken retains his heavyweight title!
