PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Don Stewart (ranked 249 p4p, 29 weight class) and Ross Devereux (ranked 826 p4p, 105 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Don Stewart!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 9 - 2, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ross Devereux!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Steve Montenegro and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stewart finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

Devereux looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Stewart!
Stewart tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Devereux wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Stewart manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Stewart is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Devereux is just riding it out for now. Stewart eventually gives up the hold.
Devereux moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Devereux looking for a sweep. Not yet Devereux, not yet.

Devereux keeping full guard, as Stewart tries to pass.

Stewart lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Devereux tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Devereux is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Stewart wants to get back to full guard.
Devereux is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Stewart!
Stewart can't escape the position.
Devereux seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Stewart is holding on tight.
Stewart sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Devereux is keen to just control but Stewart is a slippery customer.
Stewart wants to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stewart is pressing down on Devereux's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Devereux pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Stewart is keeping the position for now.

Stewart is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Stewart keeping moving, preventing Devereux from controlling successfully.
Devereux not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Stewart looking to hit a scissor sweep but Devereux is one step ahead there.
Devereux trying to control but Stewart is working from the bottom.
Stewart seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Devereux works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Stewart won't allow Devereux to pass to mount.
Stewart wants to improve his position but Devereux is controlling well.
Devereux is looking to advance position but Stewart won't allow it.
The fighters are battling for position here. Stewart manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Devereux slips nicely into half guard.
Devereux looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Devereux uses his free foot to push down on Stewart's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Stewart.
Stewart has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Devereux's lack of action.
Devereux slows the pace down in half guard.
Let's hope that Devereux has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Stewart is looking for a sweep. Devereux is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ross Devereux dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Devereux tests Stewart's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Devereux lunges at Stewart with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Stewart's hand.
Stewart is looking to land body kicks.
Devereux has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Stewart is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Devereux manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Stewart on his heels. He'll look to pass Stewart's guard now, I'm sure.
Devereux forces his way into half guard.
Stewart is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Devereux's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Devereux's back!
Stewart connects with a big shot to the side of Devereux's head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Devereux wants to escape the position.
Stewart is working the ground and pound. Can Devereux escape?

Stewart has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Devereux has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Devereux is trying to remain composed but Stewart is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.

Stewart is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Devereux up.
Stewart is landing with strikes from the back.
Stewart lands an elbow to the side of the head.
I really don't envy Devereux right now.
Stewart loading up with punches from the back mount - how long can Devereux hold on?
Stewart punches Devereux on the ear.

Stewart has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Devereux is defending well but eventually Stewart manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Devereux has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:54 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Don Stewart!
Don Stewart retains his middleweight title!
In his post fight interview, Don Stewart started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
