Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Trent Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Adam Johnson!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jab from Johnson.
Johnson fails in his attempt to clinch.
Johnson misses the shot to the body.
Alvarez moves out of range as Johnson strikes.
Alvarez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Alvarez dives in and scores a takedown into Johnson's guard.
Alvarez controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Johnson is trying to keep Alvarez in close.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alvarez controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Johnson has an active guard here but Alvarez has managed to pass into half guard.

Johnson is trying to reverse the position but instead Alvarez has taken his back - oops!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Alvarez is not going to allow Johnson to sit and survive in this position.
Alvarez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
What can Johnson do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Johnson grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.
Alvarez keeps control of the position as Johnson tries to break free.
Alvarez really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Johnson.

Alvarez scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Johnson is looking for a way out.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Alvarez shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Johnson napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Johnson bucks up and tries to throw Alvarez off but instead Alvarez has got his back!

Alvarez has got his arm under Johnson's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Johnson has spun round into Alvarez's guard beautifully! Well done that man!

Alvarez throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Alvarez looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Johnson looking to sit in guard and control but Alvarez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Johnson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Alvarez is aware though and is defending well.
Johnson working a defensive guard but Alvarez manages to pass into side control anyway.
Trent Alvarez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Johnson is trying to work for a sweep but Alvarez has mounted him!

Alvarez goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Johnson turns into him and now he's in Alvarez's guard.

Alvarez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Johnson is one step ahead there.

Johnson has gone for a leg lock! Alvarez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Johnson's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


A looping hook to the body misses from Johnson. Alvarez does a little dance to reset his feet.
Alvarez appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Alvarez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Johnson.
Johnson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Johnson throws a lazy right hand but Alvarez sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Johnson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Alvarez swivels and escapes.
Johnson shoots in but Alvarez avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Alvarez half committed to a counter leg kick.
Johnson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Trent Alvarez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Adam Johnson.

Johnson moves in looking to clinch but Alvarez pushes him off.

Alvarez throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Johnson jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Alvarez walks away with a smile on his face. Johnson gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Johnson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Alvarez is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Johnson's half guard.

Johnson wants to get back to full guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Still in half guard, Alvarez seems content to control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johnson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Alvarez tries to counter with a takedown but Johnson is quick to defend against it.
Johnson looks for a takedown but Alvarez sprawls well.
Adam Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A slapping body kick lands there for Alvarez.
Alvarez blocks a head kick by Johnson.
Alvarez misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Alvarez takes the fight into the clinch.
Alvarez is trying to force a seperation but Johnson has the dominant position.

Johnson jumps into guard, dragging Alvarez to the mat.
Alvarez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Johnson can do to turn this around?
Alvarez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Johnson is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Alvarez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Trent Alvarez is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Johnson looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Alvarez has picked Johnson up and slammed him! Johnson can't keep hold of the triangle and Alvarez manages to pass to side control!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Alvarez, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
