Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcus Persson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Denis Smirnov!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Felipe Paraventi and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Persson swats away the attempt to clinch by Smirnov.

Persson drives through with a takedown into guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smirnov can do anything to dispel that myth.

Smirnov is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Persson stops Smirnov from standing up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Persson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Persson closes the distance and clinches up with Smirnov, looking for a takedown. Persson pushes Smirnov against the cage but Smirnov circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smirnov fails with an attempt to clinch.

Smirnov moves in looking to clinch but Persson pushes him off.
Smirnov comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Persson is breathing heavily.
Persson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marcus Persson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Smirnov doesn't manage to clinch there - Persson circles away.
Smirnov tries to clinch but Persson is having none of it.
Denis Smirnov is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

and Persson counters with a shoot takedown. Smirnov fights it but they end up in guard.

Persson prevents Smirnov from getting back to his feet.

Persson drops back looking for a leg! Smirnov is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smirnov manages to kick Persson off! Persson jumps back into Smirnov's guard.

Persson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smirnov, up you get!

and Persson counters by moving into the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Persson counters with a single leg into guard. Smirnov didn't expect that.

Persson trying to control the position from guard on top but Smirnov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Persson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smirnov wants to stand but Persson is controlling the position.
Persson stopping the sweep attempt from Smirnov.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Persson wants to control from the top but Smirnov keeps moving.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Smirnov tries to clinch but Persson moves away

and Persson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Smirnov!
Persson looking to control but Smirnov is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Persson throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Smirnov wants to control but Persson is having none of it.
Smirnov is trying to keep from getting into a worse position than he's already in but Smirnov is working away and isn't letting himself get tied up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Persson dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Smirnov darts in and clinches Persson up against the cage.

Smirnov breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Smirnov drives through and clinches with Persson against the cage.
Smirnov landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Persson wants to stall.
Smirnov missing with knees to the body.
A knee to the head by Smirnov.
Smirnov misses with an elbow strike.
Smirnov prevents Persson from breaking the clinch.
Smirnov throws a knee to the head but misses.
Persson tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Smirnov using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Persson has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Persson pulls guard.
Smirnov preventing the sweep.
Persson has control of Smirnov's left arm, preventing Smirnov from doing any damage.
Persson controls Smirnov momentarily but Smirnov frees himself.
Persson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smirnov's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smirnov wants to get back to his feet but Persson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smirnov wants to hit a switch here but Persson passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Smirnov there!

Persson forces the positional change into back control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Persson trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Persson is riding his opponent, not letting Smirnov buck him off.
Can Smirnov hold on?! Persson is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.

Persson is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Smirnov is defending well though. Persson let's go of the attempt for now.
Marcus Persson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Persson is persistently looking for the submission but Smirnov is defending it well.
Smirnov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Persson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Smirnov wants to get back to his feet. He's half way up but Persson drags him back down with a jolt, managing to get his forearm deep under Smirnov 's chin! Smirnov is in real trouble! His face is turning bright red and he's forced to tap! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Marcus Persson!
