PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zuna Zai (ranked 8026 p4p, 528 weight class) and Jorge Zusi (ranked 5522 p4p, 474 weight class). Zusi is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Staring at the sun - The Offsprings. Zuna Zai has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Zuna Zai! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jorge Zusi! The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Darius Henderson and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Zusi throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Zai shoots in looking for a takedown. Zusi tries to sprawl out of it but Zai keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Zusi manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Zusi swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Zai counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Zusi is trying to escape back to his feet but Zai uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Zusi is trying to buck Zai off. Zusi trying to remain calm as Zai controls from the top position. Zai seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Zusi for as long as he can get away with. Zusi wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Zusi seems a little lost for a moment, as Zai dominates the positioning. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Zai has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Zai continues to stall.
That's one minute gone in the round. Zai creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Zusi can do anything to dispel that myth. Zai remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Zusi tries to escape but Zai is in control. Zai controlling the position. Zusi on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Zusi wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Zai is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Zusi's shoulder. That is not cool. Zai is putting a hurting on Zusi here, landing some big shots from side control. Zai in side control, just content to control the action for now.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Zusi is pushing Zai's head away, looking to escape. Zai manages to hold on to the position though. Zai controls the position. Zusi is looking to get back to his feet here but Zai is keeping cool and he's managed to take Zusi's back. Zai biding his time, controlling Zusi. Zusi is trying to stand back up. What can Zusi do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Zusi is trying to stand back up. Zusi is trying to remain composed but Zai is hammering down strikes to the side of his head. Zai is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Zai gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Zai gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Zai apologises and we restart here on the feet.
Zusi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Zusi looks winded! Zusi throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Zai. Zai shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Zusi as he jumps to the side. Zai seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Zai looks for a takedown but Zusi sprawls well. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Zuna Zai. That's going to take a lot out of him. Zai closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Zusi's guard. Zai slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Zai postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Zusi is rocked! Zai postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Zusi covers up, he's hurt! Zai keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Zai and the ref steps in to end the fight! Zai can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Zuna Zai!
