PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tom McGettigan (ranked 2940 p4p, 309 weight class) and Cliff Rigano (ranked 2344 p4p, 258 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom McGettigan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 19 - 0, fighting out of London, Cliff Rigano!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Anni Minnemäki and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McGettigan clinches.
Rigano is trying to drag McGettigan to the mat but McGettigan just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.
Rigano drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
McGettigan is working Rigano over against the ropes.
McGettigan misses with a short punch on the inside.

McGettigan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

McGettigan moves into the clinch.

McGettigan is fighting off a takedown attempt but Rigano is just too persistent for him and manages to trip McGettigan to the mat. McGettigan regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Rigano throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rigano throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McGettigan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Rigano wants to control from the top but McGettigan keeps moving.

McGettigan looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Rigano puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Rigano seems to be working for a kimura but McGettigan defends the submission attempt.
McGettigan is looking for a sweep. Rigano is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
McGettigan is concentrating on defense, preventing Rigano from advancing position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rigano seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McGettigan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Rigano is looking to advance position but McGettigan won't allow it.
Rigano wants to take a breather but McGettigan is having none of it.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Rigano shoots in for a double leg but McGettigan sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Tom McGettigan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cliff Rigano.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Rigano throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Rigano throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around McGettigan's waist but McGettigan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rigano off to one side.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Cliff Rigano will probably get the nod.
That's time! McGettigan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


McGettigan tries to close the distance and clinch but Rigano swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Rigano shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

McGettigan moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromRigano.
Rigano shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McGettigan but McGettigan pushes him off and we're back to square one.

The fight stays on the outside here - McGettigan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and McGettigan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by McGettigan.
Tom McGettigan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cliff Rigano.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McGettigan lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
McGettigan lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Rigano backwards.
McGettigan misses with a hook to the ribs.
Rigano is working for a takedown up against the ropes. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Rigano blocks a punch to the side of the head.
A head punch on the inside from McGettigan fails to land.

McGettigan is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rigano can do to turn this around?
McGettigan lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Rigano backwards.
McGettigan works on Rigano's body with a couple of short punches.

Rigano turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Rigano manages to end up in side control.
McGettigan is looking for a sweep.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Rigano goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, McGettigan has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Rigano but great work by McGettigan.
McGettigan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rigano on the ground.
Rigano tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but McGettigan wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Rigano keeps trying to improve his position.
Cliff Rigano has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rigano manages to work his way to half guard, despite McGettigan's best efforts.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rigano makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Rigano.

McGettigan got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rigano has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McGettigan has managed to get both his arms back between Rigano's legs - danger averted.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Tom McGettigan will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McGettigan wants to get back to full guard but Rigano has mounted him!

Rigano goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now McGettigan is on top in guard.

Rigano working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. McGettigan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. McGettigan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
McGettigan wants to control from the top but Rigano keeps moving.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Cliff Rigano comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rigano has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
