PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Caio Bottura (ranked 349 p4p, 37 weight class) and Rudy Rhod (ranked 322 p4p, 35 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Bottura might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Face The Pain. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
21 - 9 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Caio Bottura! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 8 - 2, fighting out of New York, Rudy Rhod! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, James Ackerman and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A clash of legs there as Rhod blocks the low kick. Rhod throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Bottura. Rhod connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Bottura thows a left - swing and a miss! Rhod checks a low kick from Bottura. Rhod keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Rhod! But no joy. Rhod uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Bottura has time to react. Rhod looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Bottura misses the body punch letting Rhod counter with a right hand. Rhod throws a nice outside leg kick. Rhod listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Rhod fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Bottura has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Rhod scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Rhod rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Bottura counters with a lovely straight right hand! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Rhod lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Rhod sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs. Bottura explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bottura throws a body kick but he wasn't in range. Bottura moves away from the strike by Rhod. Rhod looks to land a left hand but Bottura moved out of range nicely. Rhod throws a hook but Bottura avoids it easily. Bottura tried to score with a low kick but Rhod checks it. Bottura moves into the clinch successfully.
Rhod lands a nice shot to the body. Rhod swings wildly with an uppercut but Bottura uses good head movement to avoid it. Bottura pulls guard. Bottura looking for a guillotine here but Rhod defends easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Bottura is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rhod defends well. Rhod is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Bottura working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rhod doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rhod manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Bottura is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Rhod has his hands clasped together but Bottura extends and breaks Rhod's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Bottura.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Caio Bottura! After winning the bout, Caio Bottura thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
