PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Luan Barboza (ranked 1588 p4p, 236 weight class) and Tsuyoi Kakuto (ranked 1974 p4p, 283 weight class). Barboza kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Do I Wanna Know. The crowd seem to be enjoying Kakuto's choice of entrance music: Gorillaz-Dirty Harry. This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Luan Barboza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tsuyoi Kakuto!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Ben Hemmingworth and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barboza fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Kakuto looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Barboza connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Kakuto moves out of range as Barboza throws a body kick.
Kakuto gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Barboza counters with a stiff right hand.
Kakuto shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Barboza counters with a straight right hand.
Kakuto tries to clinch
enabling Barboza to counter with a crisp jab.
Kakuto throws a leg kick
and Barboza counters with a straight right hand.
Tsuyoi Kakuto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Barboza uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kakuto.

Kakuto takes the fight into the clinch.
Barboza's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Kakuto wants a takedown but no success here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

It looks like Tsuyoi Kakuto has been cut.

Kakuto is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Barboza to keep the fight standing.
Kakuto tries to score a body lock takedown but Barboza shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Kakuto goes for a takedown attempt but Barboza pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

The fighters circling - Barboza throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Kakuto is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

That has opened up Tsuyoi Kakuto's cut even more.
Barboza thuds a left hand into Kakuto's body.

and Barboza counters with a nice uppercut.
Kakuto swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Kakuto on the wrong end of a nice hook.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Barboza misses with a two punch combination.
Kakuto takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Barboza fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kakuto.
Luan Barboza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Kakuto blocks a head kick by Barboza.

and Barboza counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kakuto tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Barboza paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Barboza went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Kakuto has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Kakuto takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

and Barboza counters with a three punch combo that has Kakuto backing up. Kakuto nods at Barboza to acknowledge the strikes.
Kakuto takes one to the side of the head.
Kakuto looks to clinch
and Barboza counters with a nice uppercut.

Kakuto moves into range and clinches up with Barboza.
Barboza is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Barboza wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kakuto has him pressed against the cage.
Barboza stalls.
Barboza is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kakuto can do to turn this around?

Barboza is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Kakuto is looking to take this one to the mat.

Barboza is pressed up against the cage. Kakuto has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Barboza down to the mat. Barboza avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
We've been told by Barboza's head coaches at Soul Supremacy Rio that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
A punch lands to the side of Kakuto 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Tsuyoi Kakuto's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
Barboza lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Kakuto circles away quickly and effectively.
Barboza fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Barboza scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kakuto tries to clinch but Barboza moves out of range.

and Barboza counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Tsuyoi Kakuto's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:08 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Luan Barboza!
An out of breath Luan Barboza thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
In defeat, Tsuyoi Kakuto stepped up to the mic, saying '今日は私が勝てないと神は私に言った Kyō wa watashi ga katenaito kami wa watashi ni itta (God Told Me I cannot Win today) しかし、明日はいつ'.
