PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tower Roy (ranked 6853 p4p, 484 weight class) and Igor Shevchenko (ranked 3211 p4p, 321 weight class). Shevchenko comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Mouth For War - Pantera kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tower Roy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Igor Shevchenko!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Andrew Berry and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shevchenko stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Roy misses with a takedown
and Shevchenko connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Roy.
Shevchenko works over Roy's head and body with a nice combination.

Roy darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Roy not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Shevchenko tries to kick Roy off but Roy keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Roy with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Roy has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Shevchenko gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Roy to score an easy takedown into full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Shevchenko holds on and takes a little breather.

Roy wants to stand but Shevchenko has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Roy stays in close to Shevchenko's body and controls the position.
Shevchenko has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A left and a right from Shevchenko both land. Nice combination.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Shevchenko is trying to break the clinch but Roy has him pressed against the cage.
Roy is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Roy content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Shevchenko is leaning against Roy and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Shevchenko lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Shevchenko wants to get back to striking at distance but Roy won't allow it.
Shevchenko misses with some punches.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A frustrated look appears on Shevchenko's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Shevchenko dips to his left and cracks Roy with an uppercut!
Shevchenko misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Roy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Shevchenko steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Roy.
Nice takedown defense from Shevchenko. No joy for Roy on that attempt.
Shevchenko walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Roy checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Igor Shevchenko seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shevchenko throws a looping overhand right but Roy ducks down to avoid it.
Roy has a takedown stuffed.
Roy moves out of range of the strikes.
Shevchenko misses with an uppercut.
Tower Roy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Roy makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Shevchenko digs a good body shot into Roy's ribs.
Shevchenko displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Roy.
Shevchenko looks like he wants to counter punch here.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tower Roy. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shevchenko misses with a head kick.

and Roy counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Roy.
Shevchenko's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Roy tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Shevchenko wants to break free but Roy has control.

Roy breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shevchenko bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Shevchenko stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shevchenko wants it to stay on the feet.
Roy ducks under a wild hook from Shevchenko.
Roy walks into a left hand.
Shevchenko thumps Roy with a low kick.
Roy fails with the takedown.
Shevchenko is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Roy.
Shevchenko blocks the body kick.
Shevchenko misses with a wild combination.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Roy.
Roy is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shevchenko misses with the combination.
Roy shoots in but Shevchenko avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Shevchenko with a hook.
Shevchenko swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Roy feinted with a counter takedown.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Shevchenko thuds his right hand into Roy's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Roy moves out of range of the strikes.
Shevchenko has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Roy has a takedown stuffed.
Roy uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Shevchenko.
Roy slips a straight right by Shevchenko.
Igor Shevchenko is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Oooooh!!! Shevchenko has knocked Roy down with a huge combo! Shevchenko steps away and waves a wobbly Roy back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


Roy is rocked!
Shevchenko tries to bum rush Roy with a series of wild strikes but Roy uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Oh Roy is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Igor Shevchenko seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Roy misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Roy seems to have got his legs back now.
Shevchenko throws a combination. Roy tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Roy closes the distance and clinches.
Roy has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Shevchenko after a bit of a struggle.

Shevchenko manages to break the clinch.
Shevchenko digs a good body shot into Roy's ribs.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
A shot to the liver by Shevchenko. Beautiful body shot.
Roy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Roy walks straight into a right hand from Shevchenko - that's dropped him! Shevchenko jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Roy from any more punishment! Roy complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Igor Shevchenko!
Igor Shevchenko seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
