Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Roy McDavid! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jamie Stetson! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Sergei Dronov and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stetson lands with a kick to the ribs.
Stetson scores with a slapping inside leg kick. McDavid seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Stetson tries to sprawl but McDavid drives through with a takedown into half guard. McDavid is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
McDavid is looking to advance position but Stetson won't allow it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Stetson pushes McDavid off looking to stand but McDavid dives back in and keeps control.
Stetson is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Stetson is trying to escape back to his feet but McDavid uses the scramble to pass into side control.
McDavid in side control, just content to control the action for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McDavid wants to lay and pray for a moment but Stetson keeps working.
That's one minute gone in the round. Stetson wants to get back to his feet. McDavid controlling the position. Stetson pushes McDavid away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, McDavid gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Stetson stops McDavid from passing to mount. McDavid has hold of Stetson's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Stetson seems comfortable defending it but McDavid has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Stetson is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Stetson is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but McDavid couldn't care less - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Roy McDavid! A relieved looking Roy McDavid thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
