Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Darren Stephens! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shukman Gill! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Matheus Silva and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stephens tries to keep at a distance but Gill has taken the fight into the clinch. Gill breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Stephens throws a body kick that digs right into the meat. Stephens scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Gill ducks under a wild hook from Stephens. Gill feints the counter takedown. Gill shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Stephens gets tackled into the ropes by Gill. Gill maintains the clinch. Stephens tries for a takedown but Gill manages to get underhooks.
Stephens has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Gill is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Gill gets underhooks to prevent Stephens's takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darren Stephens. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gill pulls guard successfully.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gill is on top in guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Gill pushing down on Stephens's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Stephens on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Stephens tries to get out of the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gill content to control rather than advance. Gill is thwarting Stephens's attempts to control the position. Gill content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Gill seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Stephens does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Stephens knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gill on the ground. Stephens pushes Gill off looking to stand but Gill dives back in and keeps control.
Gill maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Stephens could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Gill has cracked it and Stephens is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Gill!
