PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between David Cain (ranked 2685 p4p, 366 weight class) and Robert McKenna (ranked 2913 p4p, 382 weight class). McKenna has chosen Freedom as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, David Cain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Robert McKenna!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Columbo Gatti and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKenna moves in looking to clinch but Cain pushes him off.
Cain misses with the body kick
and McKenna counters with a series of strikes. Cain will be more careful next time no doubt.
McKenna moves out of range as Cain strikes.
Cain lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.


It looks like Robert McKenna has been cut.

McKenna has managed to clinch.
McKenna gets through Cain's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
McKenna avoiding damage.

McKenna breaks from the clinch.
A lazy left from Cain finds it's target.

McKenna shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cain napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Cain wants to get back to his feet but McKenna is dominant here and he's now got Cain's back!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cain covering up well under a series of strikes from McKenna.

Cain is having to fend off submission attempts from McKenna, who is looking to sink in the choke. McKenna doesn't have the hooks in though and Cain manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

McKenna is pulling down on Cain's head to control his posture.
Cain prevents McKenna from getting back to his feet.
Our spies down at at Big Bear Fight Factory inform us that McKenna has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
McKenna is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Cain wanted to stand there but McKenna had control of the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Cain won't allow McKenna to get back to his feet.
Cain is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Fisticuffs that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
McKenna looking for a sweep. Not yet McKenna, not yet.
Cain has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
McKenna wants to stand and escape but Cain is having none of it.
McKenna wants to hit a switch here but Cain passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for McKenna there!
McKenna squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

McKenna is desperately trying to improve his position but Cain has a good base and remains in mount.
McKenna tries to lock up and control but Cain gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
McKenna regains half guard.
Cain tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
McKenna is looking to escape.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown but Cain shows good takedown defense.
Cain thows a leg kick but McKenna checks it

and McKenna counters with a single leg into guard. Cain didn't expect that.
McKenna stays in close to Cain's body and controls the position.
McKenna trying to control the position from guard on top but Cain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cain is adopting a defensive guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Robert McKenna will probably get the nod.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


McKenna slips a jab from Cain.
Cain slaps away a takedown attempt from McKenna, before circling back to the center of the mat.

McKenna has Cain up against the cage in a clinch.
McKenna lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
McKenna has Cain pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Cain manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
McKenna digs a right hand into Cain's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Cain's gas tank.
McKenna misses with some punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cain throws a hook but McKenna avoids it easily.
Cain leaves McKenna with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
David Cain has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert McKenna.

McKenna tries to clinch there but Cain circles away.
McKenna closes the distance looking to clinch
enabling Cain to counter with a crisp jab.
McKenna throws a head kick that misses.
Cain jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
David Cain seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

McKenna rushes Cain and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

McKenna manages to break the clinch.
Cain throws a hook but McKenna blocks it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from McKenna.

McKenna blocks the body kick.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cain as he avoids it easily.
McKenna looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
McKenna tries to clinch up but Cain circles away and keeps his distance.
It looked like Cain wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Cain throws a right hand that misses

and McKenna decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cain's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cain lands a nice leg kick that just misses McKenna's sensitive parts.

and McKenna counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

McKenna wants to free his trapped foot but Cain is holding on for dear life with his legs.

McKenna is working for a submission of some sort.

Cain won't allow McKenna to pass to mount.
McKenna thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Cain's head.
Well, if McKenna is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
McKenna works his way into full mount!
McKenna tries to control but Cain wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Robert McKenna will probably get the nod - 10:9.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Cain throws a front kick aimed at McKenna's knee but McKenna avoids it well.
Cain throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Cain swats away the attempt to clinch by McKenna.

Cain bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps McKenna's head backwards.
The fight stays on the outside here - McKenna looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Cain throws a leg kick which misses McKenna's front leg but catches the back leg as McKenna tries to avoid it.
Cain throws a chopping leg kick but McKenna manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
McKenna lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
McKenna is looking to clinch but Cain is avoiding it.
Cain swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

McKenna clinches up against the cage.
Cain takes a shot to the head.
McKenna misses with a shot to the kidneys.
McKenna lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Cain.
McKenna has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Cain after a bit of a struggle.

McKenna breaks from the clinch.
David Cain is winning the standup battle so far.
Cain misses with a leg kick.
McKenna keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Cain.
It seemed like McKenna was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Robert McKenna is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

McKenna tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Cain manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown but Cain shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

McKenna fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cain, pushing him back against the cage.
A quick uppercut on the inside from McKenna.
McKenna tries to work over Cain's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
McKenna looking to stall.

McKenna escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
McKenna changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cain tries to avoid it but McKenna manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cain to the ground. Cain escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
David Cain has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert McKenna.
Cain throws a hook to the side of McKenna's head but McKenna sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McKenna tries to clinch up but Cain circles away and keeps his distance.
McKenna tries to clinch but Cain is having none of it.
David Cain has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

McKenna dives in and grabs Cain's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cain pushes down on McKenna's head and hops out.
McKenna tries to clinch but Cain is having none of it.
Cain dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Cain rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and McKenna counters with a single leg into guard. Cain didn't expect that.

Cain wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and McKenna manages to pass to side control.
McKenna trying to control the action but Cain is working from the bottom.
McKenna is looking to advance position but Cain won't allow it.

Cain keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

McKenna wants to work for an arm triangle but Cain is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
McKenna throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
McKenna seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
McKenna thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Robert McKenna is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cain is not content to let McKenna control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Robert McKenna.
I've got McKenna winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
