PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 472 p4p, 78 weight class) and Kelvin Handleman (ranked 507 p4p, 82 weight class). Handleman has chosen Pride FC Theme as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kelvin Handleman!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Jorge Garcia and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Handleman connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


It looks like John Smith has been cut.
Handleman throws a lazy right hand but Smith sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Handleman fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Smith on the side of the head.
Smith moves out of range as Handleman strikes.
Handleman looks to land a right hand but Smith moved out of range.
Smith feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Smith displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Handleman.
It looked like Smith was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Handleman.
Kelvin Handleman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Handleman lands with a cross.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith throws a hook to the side of Handleman's head but Handleman sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

It looks like Kelvin Handleman has been cut.

Handleman shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Handleman showed some decent athleticism there.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Handleman connects with a nice short shot to Smith's temple.

Handleman takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Handleman sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Handleman's corner calls for a 1-2. Handleman obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Smith thows a left - swing and a miss!
A nice side step and Handleman releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Handleman walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

Smith tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Handleman was well out of range. Poor timing from Smith.
Handleman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Handleman shoots in looking for a takedown but Smith manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Handleman's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Handleman will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Smith parries the strikes from Handleman easily there. Handleman is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Smith to escape.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Handleman postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Kelvin Handleman very nearly forgot to thank Freebok (85% Laundry) amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
In defeat, John Smith stepped up to the mic, saying 'I need to keep working hard. I congratulate the champ, but I'm coming back!'.
