Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Vadim Golovkin (ranked 216 p4p, 26 weight class) and Thomas Maeda (ranked 925 p4p, 117 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Maeda's choice of entrance music: Submission. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Vadim Golovkin!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thomas Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Hirohito Nitta and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maeda moves to clinch but Golovkin breaks away
and Golovkin connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Maeda swings widly with a right hand
letting Golovkin counter with a right hand.

Maeda clinches up against the ropes.
Maeda tries to pull guard but Golovkin holds him up against the ropes and eventually Maeda drops back down to his feet.

Golovkin breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Maeda shoots and misses
and Golovkin connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Maeda fails with an attempt to clinch.
It looked like Golovkin was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Maeda.
Maeda with a lazy takedown attempt
enabling Golovkin to counter with a crisp jab.
Vadim Golovkin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Thomas Maeda.
Golovkin uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Maeda tries to clinch but Golovkin moves out of range.
Golovkin avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Golovkin swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Maeda dives in for a single leg takedown but Golovkin sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the ropes.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Maeda tries for a takedown but Golovkin sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Golovkin is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

The fight stays on the outside here - Maeda looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Golovkin appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Golovkin digs a good body shot into Maeda's ribs.
We've been told by Golovkin's head coaches at Blake Phoenix's Champion Factory that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Maeda rushes Golovkin and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.

Golovkin breaks from the clinch.
Maeda is looking to clinch but Golovkin is avoiding it.
Maeda is looking to clinch.
Golovkin is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Maeda tries to clinch but Golovkin is having none of it.
Golovkin lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Maeda looks to throw the jab but Golovkin is out of range.
It looked like Golovkin wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Maeda tries to clinch but Golovkin is having none of it.
Maeda fails with the takedown
and Golovkin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Golovkin circles away from the clinch attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A punch combination from Golovkin misses.
A nice side step and Maeda releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Nice takedown defense from Golovkin. No joy for Maeda on that attempt.
Golovkin was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Maeda tries to clinch
letting Golovkin counter with a right hand.
Thomas Maeda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maeda throws an overhand right that lands on Golovkin's shoulder, as Golovkin tries to avoid the shot.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Maeda tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Golovkin manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Golovkin connects with a good right hand that stumbles Maeda. Maeda circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Vadim Golovkin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Maeda throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Golovkin stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Golovkin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Golovkin takes a swing at Maeda's ribcage but misses.
Maeda wants to clinch
enabling Golovkin to counter with a crisp jab.
Golovkin stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
The fight stays on the outside here - Maeda looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Golovkin is really peppering his opponent's head with punches.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maeda wants to clinch up but Golovkin keeps it at a distance.
Maeda tries to clinch up
and Golovkin counters with a straight right hand.
Golovkin cracks a nice hook into Maeda's ribs.
Maeda tries to clinch up but Golovkin circles away and keeps his distance.

A telegraphed right hand from Maeda misses the target.
Golovkin throwing a counter right hand but Maeda manages to avoid it.
Golovkin scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Golovkin cracks Maeda with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Maeda looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Golovkin finish him?


Maeda is rocked!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Maeda tries to clinch but Golovkin moves out of range.
Maeda is still on wobbly legs! Can Golovkin finish him?
Golovkin lands an uppercut out of nowhere! Maeda falls backwards - clearly groggy! Golovkin dives in and finishes the fight with more strikes for a TKO finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Vadim Golovkin!
Vadim Golovkin retains his lightweight title!
After winning the bout, Vadim Golovkin thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
In defeat, Thomas Maeda stepped up to the mic, saying 'Through Japanese translator to English. "My opponent was better today. I will not underestimate him next time"'.
