The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wayne tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Bonaiuti swivels and escapes.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Wayne, as that shot connected.
Maurizio Bonaiuti seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bonaiuti shoots in for a takedown but Wayne shows good takedown defense.
Bonaiuti blocks a head kick by Wayne.
Bonaiuti closes this distance looking for a takedown but Wayne circles away.
Bonaiuti throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wayne's waist but Wayne gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bonaiuti off to one side.
Bonaiuti's coach down at Hilo Hit Squad was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Bonaiuti's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
John Wayne has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Maurizio Bonaiuti.
Wayne lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Wayne moves in looking to clinch but Bonaiuti pushes him off.

Bonaiuti fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Wayne sprawls well initially but Bonaiuti persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Bonaiuti wants to pass the guard but Wayne is defending well.
Bonaiuti takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Bonaiuti is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Bonaiuti wants to free his trapped foot but Wayne is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Bonaiuti has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Wayne defend it? Bonaiuti steps over the head and cranks it - Wayne is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Bonaiuti!
