PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dustin Custer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Custer has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rick James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dustin Custer!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Gwen Towbar and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Custer fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Custer looks gassed!

James decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
James keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Custer has hold of James's hands but James slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
James perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like James is going to stand back up.
The fighters are battling for position here. Custer manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

James stands and steps away. Custer gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

James pushes Custer up against the cage in a clinch.

James has clasped his hands together around Custer's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James is trying to get an arm triangle but Custer is defending well.
James content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

James has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
A nice combination there by James.
James throws a nice head kick!

James shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
James slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

James stands up from Custer's guard - James perhaps looking for a knockout.

James instigates a clinch.
James has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Custer is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Custer gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
James is trying to stand.
James regains full guard. Nicely done.
James controlling the position.
James wants to sweep here but Custer controlling him for the moment.
James knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Custer on the ground.

James seems keen to control Custer's posture.
James manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Custer manages to get himself to full guard.
James wants to pass the guard but Custer is keeping the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
James has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Custer is proving hard to escape from.
James's corner is telling him to maintain position.
James wants to control from the top but Custer keeps moving.
James controls from within his opponent's guard.
Custer lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for James!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
James keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick James dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Dustin Custer's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



James shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Custer won't allow James to pass to mount.
Custer wants to control but James is keeping busy and won't allow it.
James is pressing down on Custer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Custer is holding on for now.
It looks like James is going to stand back up.
Well, if James is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Custer trying to control here.

Custer on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Custer is breathing heavily.
James wants to pass to mount but Custer is defending the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

James shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
James seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Custer looking to hit a scissor sweep but James is one step ahead there.

Custer can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as James controls the pace.
James pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Custer is keeping the position for now.
Rick James overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
James has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Custer is proving hard to escape from.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
James throws a series of punches but Custer avoids them all with ease.
James looks to land a body kick but Custer moved away.
James shoots for a takedown but Custer saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

James clinches with his opponent.

James escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Custer gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

James controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

James gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
James tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Custer swivels and escapes.
Custer doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
James tries to clinch up but Custer circles away and keeps his distance.

James gets a takedown into half guard.
Custer is looking for a sweep. James is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Custer is refusing to be controlled, as James sits in half guard.
James has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Custer regains half guard.
James is taking a breather. Custer says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Custer is pressing down on James's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Custer wants to sweep here but James controlling him for the moment.
James passes Custer's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Custer is looking for a sweep. James is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
James is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
James seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Custer for as long as he can get away with.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick James dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Dustin Custer's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!


James has his takedown stuffed
and Custer counters with a good, hard body kick but James shrugs it off.

Custer shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in James's guard.
Custer trying to control but James is working from the bottom.
James pulls Custer in to control the position.
James looking for a sweep. Not yet James, not yet.
Custer is looking to stand up but James won't let him.

James wants to sweep but no luck.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

James drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

James decides to stand up, so the ref orders Custer to his feet.
Rick James is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
James shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Custer as he avoids it easily.

James gets a takedown into half guard.
James is looking to pass Custer's guard but actually Custer recovers to full guard.
Custer pulls James in to control the position.
James showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

James won't allow Custer to sweep him here.
Custer throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
James has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
James is looking to stand up but Custer won't let him.

James stands and steps away. Custer gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
The fight stays on the outside here - Custer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

James looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Custer is trying to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
James lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
James wants to free his trapped foot but Custer is holding on for dear life with his legs.
James content to control rather than advance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
James frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Custer is looking to improve his position but James isn't that keen on the idea.
James tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Dustin Custer has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
James lands a nice shot to the head.

James is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

James closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Custer tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
Rick James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Custer wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rick James showed his dominance in that final round.
Well James has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
