PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fletch Brandis (ranked 1118 p4p, 20 weight class) and Dominique Bell (ranked 2730 p4p, 52 weight class). Brandis kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Lynyrd Skynyrd : The Ballad of Curtis Loew. The key to victory for Fletch Brandis has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Fletch Brandis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
20 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dominique Bell! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Alan Glass and Robert Twigg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brandis misses with a body shot.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Bell. Bell shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Bell slips a straight right by Brandis. Brandis definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Bell moves out of range of the strikes. Bell looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. A little feinted left hand from Brandis on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Fletch Brandis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dominique Bell. Brandis lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bell circles away quickly and effectively. Bell is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. Brandis moves into range and connects with a jab.
It looks like Dominique Bell has been cut. Brandis missing with a left hand there. Bell was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Brandis throws a body shot but no joy. And Bell tries to counter it with a takedown but Brandis pushes his down on his head and steps out. Bell shoots in but Brandis avoids the takedown attempt easily. Bell looking to score a takedown here. Brandis is defending well but Bell drives through and ends up in Brandis's guard. Bell trying to control the position from guard on top but Brandis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Bell drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Brandis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Bell has Brandis in his guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Bell throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Brandis escapes and throws Bell's legs to the side, diving into side control!
That's one minute gone in the round. Bell can't do much from the bottom here. Bell is looking for a sweep. Bell can't do much from the bottom here. Bell manages to get back to half guard. Bell tries to get to full guard but Brandis has control of the leg.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Bell moves into full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bell is looking for a triangle but Brandis pushes his legs off easily.
Bell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Brandis wants to get up but he can't break Bell's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Bell working for a triangle but Brandis defends it easily.
Bell wants to hit a switch here but Brandis passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Bell there! Brandis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brandis controlling from the full mount. Brandis get's back to his feet. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Bell is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Nice defenses there by Bell. Brandis tries to bum rush Bell with a series of wild strikes but Bell uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Brandis lands a big uppercut and Bell crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Bell looks OK. Brandis waves Bell back to his feet!
Bell is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Bell drops his hands momentarily. Brandis doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Bell staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Bell doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Fletch Brandis! Our winner, Fletch Brandis, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
