PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sergio Mane (ranked 24949 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Franc (ranked 24936 p4p, 0 weight class). Mane comes to the cage accompanied by Eye of the Tiger. Franc has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Sergio Mane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Paul Franc!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Michael Johnstone and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Franc fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Jeez, both these guys look absolutely knackered already, that's not a good sign!
Mane looks to throw the jab but Franc is out of range.

Mane fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Franc sprawls well initially but Mane persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Mane is working for a kimura but Franc is defending it quite comfortably.

Mane is working for a submission of some sort.
Mane trying to mount his opponent but Franc defends it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Franc wants to get back to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Franc keeps trying to improve his position.
We've been hearing good reports from Mane's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Franc wants to improve his position but Mane is controlling well.

Mane tries to pass the half guard into mount. Franc knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Franc felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Franc is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Franc is not content to let Mane control the position.
Mane is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Mane passes to full mount!
Mane cracks Franc with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Franc is in all sorts of trouble here.

Mane postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Franc looks a forlorn figure.
Mane avoids the attempt from Franc to control.
Mane prevents Franc from getting the reversal.
Mane trying to control but Franc is having none of it.
Franc is looking to get to half guard.
A nice elbow there by Mane.
Mane looking to control and managing it successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Franc tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Mane with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Mane with shots to the head and body - Franc looks very uncomfortable down there.

Mane looking for a guillotine from mount but Franc is having none of it.
Mane landing strikes, looking to finish!
Mane has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Franc is desperately trying to improve his position but Mane has a good base and remains in mount.

Mane avoids the attempt from Franc to control.
Franc really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mane. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Franc is working to get back to half guard.
Mane is trying to take his opponent's back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sergio Mane dominated that round.
That's time! Mane's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Mane throws a leg kick

and Franc counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Mane!
Mane gets back to half guard.

Franc is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Mane doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Franc.
Mane looks like he's trying to stand up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Mane wants to stand but Franc is controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Mane moves into the clinch successfully.
Mane lands a left hand.
Franc tries to score a body lock takedown but Mane shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
The referee is keeping an eye on Mane - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Mane manages to break the clinch.
Franc gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Mane moves into the clinch.

Franc can't get the takedown.
Sergio Mane has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Franc.
Franc is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Mane is defending well.

Mane breaks the clinch.
Franc changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mane tries to avoid it but Franc manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mane to the ground. Mane escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mane throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Mane throws a low kick, looking for Franc's leg but Franc calmly moves out of range.
Mane fails to land with a series of punches.

and Franc counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Franc.

Franc tries to free his leg and advance position but Mane is retaining full guard.

Franc connects with a couple of short punches.
Franc wants to pass the guard but Mane is keeping the position.

Franc thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Mane wants to sweep but no luck.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Sergio Mane will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Mane throws a combination that misses

and Franc counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mane won't be happy with that.

Mane throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
A head kick by Mane misses
and Franc counters with a left and a right that stings Mane.
Sergio Mane seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Franc shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Franc fails with a takedown attempt.
Franc goes for a double leg but Mane avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Mane continues to drive forward.
Sergio Mane has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Franc.
Franc shoots for a takedown but Mane saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Mane drops down looking for a counter takedown but Franc sprawls and moves away.
Mane misses with a low kick.

Franc closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mane quickly recovers to half guard.

Mane kicks off Franc and gets to his feet.

Mane stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mane wants it to stay on the feet.
Mane feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Franc closes the distance and clinches up with Mane, looking for a takedown. Franc pushes Mane against the cage but Mane circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Franc gets a double leg takedown into Mane's guard.

Franc drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mane manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Franc has Mane in his guard.


Mane is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Mane passes Franc's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Mane lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Mane is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Franc is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Mane pulls his head out easily.
Franc controlling the position well.
Mane takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Franc wants to control but Mane passes into side.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Franc tries to bench press Mane off him but Mane keeps the position.
Franc trying to remain calm as Mane controls from the top position.

Mane is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Franc has escaped the position, nice work there.

Franc can't do much from the bottom here.
Franc tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Sergio Mane overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mane controls the position from side control.

Mane goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Franc has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mane but great work by Franc.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mane manages to work his way to half guard, despite Franc's best efforts.

Mane is holding on to half guard well.

Franc is working for a submission of some sort.
Mane wants to control but Franc is keeping busy.
Franc is keen to just control but Mane is a slippery customer.
Mane is pressing down on Franc's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Franc trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Mane manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!


Franc looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sergio Mane showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mane has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Sergio Mane decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
