Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lavern Mathis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Frank Mir! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Daniel Blasius and Radbod Blank.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The fight stays on the outside here - Mir looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Mathis circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mir tries to clinch but Mathis is having none of it. Mathis is looking for a counter combo. Mathis keeps the fight on the outside. Mir closes the distance looking to clinch and Mathis counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Mathis is in close to Mir's body, working some short punches and elbows. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mathis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Mathis prevents Mir from getting back to his feet. Mir is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mathis looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Mathis gets to his feet. Mir looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Frank Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Mathis circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mir tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Mir throws a front kick that sends Mathis stumbling back into the cage. Mir tries to clinch up. Mir misses with a takedown attempt and Mathis counters with a single leg into guard. Mir didn't expect that. Mathis really is a fat lump. Mir wants to control but Mathis passes easily into half guard.
Mathis prevents Mir from improving his position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mathis is working for a kimura but Mir is defending it quite comfortably.
Mathis lands with a punch from half guard. Mir throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mir is trying to get back to full guard. Mathis seems to be looking for submissions.
Mathis is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Mathis drops an elbow to the side of Mir's head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Mathis manages to move to mount!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mathis with good strikes from the mount here! The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Mathis cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Mathis postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Mir looks a forlorn figure.
Mathis has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Mathis working Mir over with strikes here. Mathis punishing his opponent with strikes. Mathis content just to control the position here. Mathis connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Mathis landing strikes from the mount and Mir is in trouble!
That's four minutes gone in the round. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mathis scoring with strikes but Mir is staying in there.
Mir is rocked! Mathis putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Mir is still in real trouble! Can Mathis finish him? Mathis connects with a bit shot that sees Mir covering up! More strikes from Mathis and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Mathis is our winner by TKO!
