Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Antonio Santiago! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lei Wulong! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Shigeki Fujiwara and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wulong throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Wulong misses with a low kick. Wulong on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Lei Wulong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Wulong throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Santiago sees it coming and avoids it easily. Wulong throws a big shot that misses. Santiago bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Wulong's head backwards. Santiago misses with a wild body shot. Wulong throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Wulong misses with a straight right. Santiago throws a sloppy body shot
and Wulong counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Wulong fails to land with a series of punches.

and Santiago counters with a right hand to the body. Wulong misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

That's one minute gone in the round. Some wild striking there from Wulong.
Wulong throws a jab when Santiago was well out of range. Wulong connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Santiago takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. A swing and a miss from Wulong. Santiago shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Wulong's guard. Santiago drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Wulong manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Santiago has Wulong in his guard. Wulong not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Santiago is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Santiago throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Wulong looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Wulong tries to free his leg and advance position but Santiago is retaining full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Santiago looking for a sweep. Not yet Santiago, not yet. Wulong works a leg free and moves into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Santiago wants to get back to full guard. Wulong is looking to advance position but Santiago won't allow it. Santiago gets back to full guard.
Wulong is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Santiago keeping full guard, as Wulong tries to pass. Santiago looking for subs off his back but Wulong has passed one foot through into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Santiago is staying active underneath Wulong, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Santiago works his way to full guard. Good work. Santiago wants to sweep here but Wulong controlling him for the moment. Santiago manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Wulong manages to get himself to full guard.

A close round but Lei Wulong will probably get the nod. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Santiago walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Wulong throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Wulong throws a hook but Santiago avoids it easily. Wulong ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A slow jab from Wulong misses its intended target. Wulong throws a lazy right hand but Santiago sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Nice defenses there by Santiago. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wulong looks to throw the jab but Santiago is out of range. Wulong throws a leg kick that misses. Santiago blocks a jab. Good work by Santiago as he checks the leg kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Santiago fails with the takedown. Wulong scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Santiago connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Wulong momentarily.
Santiago ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Wulong connects with a single shot there. Wulong throws a leg kick that misses. Santiago moves out of range of the strikes. Wulong is looking to score with low kicks. Lei Wulong is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Wulong wants to land a leg kick but Santiago is out of range. A telegraphed right hand from Wulong misses the target. A solid leg kick lands there for Wulong.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wulong throws a low kick but it's checked well by Santiago. Wulong tries to clinch there but Santiago circles away.
Santiago moves away from the strike by Wulong. Santiago tries for a takedown but Wulong sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Wulong slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Wulong waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Santiago. Santiago looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Wulong! The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Santiago cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Santiago goes for an armbar but Wulong turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Wulong. Santiago is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wulong passes into half guard. Santiago is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Wulong pulls his head out easily. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Santiago wants to sweep but Wulong has passed to side control! Santiago looks to move to half guard but instead Wulong has passed into mount! Damn! Wulong content just to control the position here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Santiago looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Wulong scores with punches from the back.
Wulong just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Lei Wulong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Nice shot lands for Wulong. Santiago has his takedown stuffed and Santiago takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Wulong throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Santiago decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Wulong wants to improve his position but Santiago is controlling well.

That's one minute gone in the round. Wulong lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Santiago! Santiago is working to get back to half guard.
Wulong takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Wulong trying to control but he's not successful this time. Santiago can't escape the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Wulong jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Santiago manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Wulong tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Santiago is able to avoid easily. Santiago has his takedown stuffed and Wulong counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wulong throws a jab but it's blocked by Santiago. Wulong sizes up Santiago with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Wulong fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Santiago manages to avoid it. Wulong thows a left - swing and a miss! Santiago throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wulong's waist but Wulong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Santiago off to one side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Antonio Santiago. That's going to take a lot out of him. Santiago slips under a jab from Wulong. Wulong throws a left and a right that both miss
and Santiago counters with a shoot takedown. Wulong fights it but they end up in guard. Wulong looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Santiago loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wulong controlling Santiago's posture. Wulong not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Santiago tries to free his leg and advance position but Wulong is retaining full guard. Wulong wants to sweep but no luck. Santiago pushes down on Wulong's leg and manages to get into half guard. Santiago with the ground and pound but Wulong uses the opportunity to regain guard. Santiago looking to pass the guard. Santiago working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close third round but Lei Wulong just about did enough to take it. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Wulong throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Wulong pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Wulong swinging wilding here.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Wulong misses with a wild body shot. Santiago connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Wulong ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Santiago moves away. Santiago shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Santiago was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
That's one minute gone in the round. Wulong blocking the ground and pound. Santiago landing strikes, looking to finish! Wulong has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Wulong trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble. Wulong covering up well under a barage of strikes. Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Santiago.
Santiago misses with an elbow to the head. Wulong is trapped and Santiago is scoring with shots to the head and body. Santiago is trying to stick to Wulong's back but Wulong is turning into Santiago. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Santiago's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Wulong.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Santiago has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Wulong is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Santiago. Santiago sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Wulong prevents Santiago from improving his position. Wulong perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Let's hope that Wulong has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Santiago wants to get back to full guard. Wulong sitting and controlling from the half guard.

Santiago wants to get back to full guard but Wulong has passed into side control. Wulong wants to take Santiago's back but he can't do it this time. Santiago is trying to escape the mount.

Wulong thows a body shot but no joy. Santiago with a poor takedown and Wulong counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Santiago is lucky that one didn't land flush. Santiago uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Wulong. A telegraphed right hand from Santiago misses the target. Santiago fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Wulong sprawls well initially but Santiago persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Wulong desperately trying to maintain half guard. Wulong has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Santiago is working away from the top position though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wulong might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Santiago kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Santiago thows a huge punch but Wulong dodges it nicely.
Santiago passes to full mount! Santiago throwing strikes here but Wulong is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Wulong tries to hold on but Santiago pushes him away. Santiago lands a big elbow. Santiago working for a guillotine from mount but Wulong is in no mood to give up. A nice elbow there by Santiago.

Wulong sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Santiago wants to pass to mount but Wulong is defending the position. Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - an gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt. Wulong is looking to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Santiago thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Wulong's head. Wulong is controlling Santiago's position as best he can from this difficult position. Santiago trying to mount his opponent but Wulong defends it. Santiago missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Santiago wants to pass to mount but Wulong is defending the position. Wulong is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Santiago's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Santiago's back!
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Wulong softening up his opponent with strikes here.

Lei Wulong is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Santiago is working hard here to advance position. Santiago is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Antonio Santiago has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Santiago turns into Wulong and is now in his guard.
