Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
30 - 13 - 2, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
35 - 18 - 0, fighting out of New York, Archie Moore! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Moore lands with a straight right. Staal didn't see that one coming. Staal throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Moore has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Staal loads up on a big right hand but Moore slips the punch. Moore appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body. Staal tried to score with a low kick but Moore checks it. Moore swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Moore uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Staal. Staal stuns Moore with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Moore misses with a lunging right hand
and Staal counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Moore! We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Moore is trying to control Staal's posture but Staal avoids it. Staal throws an elbow but Moore slips to the side and avoids it well. Moore dodges the ground and pound from Staal. Staal tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Staal content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Staal scores with a couple of short elbows. Staal scores with a couple of short elbows. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Moore trying to remain calm as Staal controls from the top position. Staal working the strikes but Moore uses the opportunity to regain half guard. Staal throwing shots but Moore is blocking nicely. Staal trying to control the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Staal lands with a punch from half guard. Staal is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Moore is looking to improve his position.
Staal not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Staal wants to free his trapped foot but Moore is holding on for dear life with his legs. Staal is figuring out what he wants to do next.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Staal lands strikes from half guard. Staal passes to full mount! Staal controlling his opponent. Moore wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Staal.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Staal content just to control the position here. Staal has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Moore is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Staal looking to ground and pound but Moore is blocking nicely. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Staal looking to control but Moore is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Moore really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Eric Staal dominated that round. That's time! Staal's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Moore misses with a leg kick and Staal counters with a lovely straight right hand! Moore throws a head kick but Staal moves out of range.
Moore takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Moore misses with a right hand and Staal counters with a nice body shot. Staal moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Moore tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Staal throws a sloppy head kick and Moore counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Moore checks a leg kick nicely. Staal lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Moore at a distance.
Moore on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Staal. Staal obviously looking to wear him down.
Staal is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Moore can do to turn this around? Staal fakes a jab and scores with a low kick. Staal lands a leg kick that knocks Moore off balance momentarily. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Staal buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Staal ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Staal lands a big head kick that sends Moore tumbling to the mat! Staal takes a step backwards and waves Moore back to his feet - he wants the finish!
It looks like Archie Moore has been cut. Moore throws the left hand but Staal avoids the punch easily. Moore displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Staal fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Moore looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Staal checks a leg kick. Moore has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Staal finds it's way round the side to connect with Moore's head. Staal missing with a left hand there. Moore was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Staal misses with a left hand and Staal takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. A head kick misses from Moore. Staal throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Moore looks like he wanted to counter with a high kick but didn't throw it. Staal fails with a takedown attempt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Moore takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Staal closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Staal lands in his opponent's guard. Staal throws a strike but Moore rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Moore preventing the sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Staal tries to strike from the bottom.
Eric Staal overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Staal wants to improve his position but instead Moore has moved into half guard.
Moore is thwarting Staal's attempts to control the position. Staal is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Moore passes into side control, despite Staal's attempt to control the position.
Staal is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Moore is one step ahead and moves to full mount! Moore really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Staal. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Staal is desperately trying to improve his position but Moore has a good base and remains in mount. Staal sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Moore controlling the action here. Staal tries to get to full guard but Moore has control of the leg. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Eric Staal dominated that second round. The cut man is working on Archie Moore's cut. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!
Moore on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Eric Staal seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Moore throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Staal tests Moore's chin there with a solid looking shot. A shot to the body from Moore misses and Staal counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Moore moves forwards but Staal connects with a nice, crisp jab. Staal ducks under a wild hook from Moore. Staal feinted with a counter takedown. Moore bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Staal circles to his right before unloading a perfect head kick! Moore drops to the canvas, hurt badly! Staal follows Moore to the ground and unloads with a series of strikes that force the referee to step in and end the fight! This one is all over!
