Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Luiz Alves! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ethan Irwin! The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Marco Blurström and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alves misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Irwin misses with a body kick. Alves attempts a counter takedown but Irwin avoids it well and moves away. Alves closes this distance looking for a takedown but Irwin circles away. Alves with a lazy takedown attempt and Irwin connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Luiz Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him. Irwin throws a nice head kick!
Irwin misses with a kick to the body so Alves counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Irwin wriggles free and stands up. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Irwin lands with a slapping head kick. Alves fails with the takedown and Irwin counters with a body kick. Irwin explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work. Alves is looking to clinch. Irwin pushes Alves up against the ropes in a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alves is trying to pull guard but Irwin has him pressed against the ropes. Irwin manages to break the clinch.
Alves misses with a hook
and Irwin counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Irwin throws a solid leg kick but Alves takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Irwin. Alves seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Irwin lands with a good body shot. Ethan Irwin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Irwin throws a head kick but Alves moves out of range.
A low kick from Irwin is predictable there and Alves counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Alves. Irwin tries to land a sweep but no joy. Alves being controlled here momentarily. Alves stops Irwin from standing up. Alves throws a big elbow that misses. Alves trying to control but Irwin is working from the bottom. Alves thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alves missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Alves throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Irwin works some decent striking defense from the bottom. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Alves won't allow Irwin to get back to his feet. Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground! Alves trying to control the position from guard on top but Irwin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Alves thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Alves has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Irwin wants to get back to his feet but Alves is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Alves trying to control but Irwin is working from the bottom. Alves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Irwin swivels though and keeps the full guard. Alves preventing the sweep. Irwin is looking to stand up but Alves isn't so interested in that idea.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ethan Irwin dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Irwin throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Irwin works the jab nicely. Alves throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Irwin counters with an inside leg kick. Alves is looking to clinch. Irwin fails in his attempt to clinch. Alves gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Irwin counters with a low kick, right behind Alves 's knee. Irwin scores with a hook to the body. Alves takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Irwin wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Alves has his takedown stuffed and Irwin counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Irwin closes the distance and clinches. A hook to the body from Irwin.
Alves is trying to pull guard but Irwin turns him against the ropes and we stay in the clinch. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Luiz Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's one minute gone in the round. Still in the clinch, Irwin scores with a nice short uppercut. Alves turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Irwin is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Alves is trying for a kimura here. Irwin looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Alves wins by kimura!
