PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ricardo Gracie (ranked 3014 p4p, 330 weight class) and Eigi Takagi (ranked 19678 p4p, 531 weight class). Takagi has chosen Welcome to the Jungle as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ricardo Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Eigi Takagi!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Takagi fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Gracie misses with a takedown
and Takagi counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Gracie shoots and misses
and Takagi counters with a nice uppercut.
Takagi throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Gracie lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Gracie throwing strikes but missing.
Gracie trying to control but Takagi is working from the bottom.
Takagi is trying to hold Gracie in close to prevent damage but Gracie has managed to pass into half guard.

Gracie is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Takagi is trying to maintain the position but Gracie is very close to passing his half guard.

Takagi has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Gracie seems to be working for a kimura but Takagi defends the submission attempt.

Takagi is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Gracie scores with a couple of nice shots.
Gracie tries to pass the half guard into mount. Takagi knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Gracie is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Takagi is just riding it out for now. Gracie eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Takagi defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Takagi into the ropes where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Takagi looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Gracie wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Gracie stuffs the takedown attempt from Takagi. Takagi gets slowly back to his feet.

and Takagi counters with a nice double leg into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Takagi accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Gracie has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Takagi can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Takagi is looking to take a break and control but Gracie is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Takagi is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Eigi Takagi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

and Takagi counters with a left and a right that stings Gracie.
Eigi Takagi is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Gracie gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Gracie ties up his opponent against the ropes and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Gracie no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Gracie has momentary wrist control but Takagi slips an elbow through the middle.


Gracie is rocked!
Takagi wants to pass the guard but Gracie is keeping the position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gracie is on top in guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gracie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gracie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Takagi is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Gracie off and has taken his back!
Gracie turns into Takagi and is now in his guard.
Gracie is looking to work some ground and pound but Takagi has wrist control.
Takagi keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom.
Gracie trying to control but Takagi is working from the bottom.

Gracie avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Takagi wants to stand but Gracie is controlling the position.
Gracie stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Takagi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Takagi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Takagi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gracie's guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ricardo Gracie.
I think Gracie has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
