Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sammy Berggren (ranked 3036 p4p, 327 weight class) and Rory Bates (ranked 4115 p4p, 409 weight class). Berggren comes to the cage accompanied by Mozart - Lacrimosa. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rory Bates!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Kenichi Hosakawa and Taro Takaoka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight moves into the clinch position.
Berggren has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Bates misses with a knee to the head.
Bates lands a nice elbow.
Berggren dodges an elbow strike from Bates.
Berggren gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Bates regains guard.
Berggren drops back, looking for a kneebar! Bates looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Bates looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Bates!
Bates really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Berggren. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Berggren stuck in half guard on the bottom here.
Bates working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Berggren has one of Bates's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Berggren's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Bates tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Berggren wants to get back to his feet but Bates drags him back down.
Berggren struggling a bit here.
Bates tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Berggren pushes Bates away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Bates gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
You can see the frustration on Berggren's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Bates is looking to take a break and control but Berggren is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
I wouldn't like to be where Berggren is right now.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Berggren can't do much from the bottom here.
Bates wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Berggren, who protects the arm well.
Berggren is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Bates asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Berggren throws Bates to one side and escapes!
Berggren circles away from the clinch attempt
and Berggren decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Bates's guard.
Bates keeping moving, preventing Berggren from controlling successfully.
Berggren is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Berggren is pushing down on Bates's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bates is fighting to maintain full guard but Berggren has managed to sneak the leg through.
Berggren has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Bates defend it? Berggren steps over the head and cranks it - Bates is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Berggren!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Sammy Berggren!
