Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matthew Newell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chuck Liddell! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Daniel Franklin and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newell closes the distance and clinches up with Liddell, looking for a takedown. Newell pushes Liddell against the cage but Liddell circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Newell drops his hands momentarily and Liddell takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Liddell throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Newell. Newell is looking to chop away at Liddell's legs. Liddell misses with a wild body shot. Newell fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Newell looks to land a combination but Liddell avoids it well. Newell swats away the attempt to clinch by Liddell. Liddell tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Newell throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Liddell throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Liddell tries to bum rush Newell with a series of wild strikes but Newell uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Newell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddell walks into a stiff left hand from Newell. Newell closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Liddell to the mat! Liddell manages to get full guard. Newell trying to control the position from guard on top but Liddell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Liddell being controlled here, momentarily. Liddell wants to get back to his feet but Newell is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Newell advances to half guard. Newell gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Liddell is looking to clinch. Newell tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Liddell falls off balance throwing a combination
and Liddell takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Chuck Liddell is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Liddell swinging wilding here.
Liddell tries to clinch but Newell moves away and Newell counters by moving into the clinch. Newell prevents Liddell from breaking the clinch. Newell displaying some good clinch control by pressing Liddell up against the cage. Liddell prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matthew Newell. That's going to take a lot out of him. Liddell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Some wild striking there from Newell.
Liddell tries to clinch up. Liddell throws a combination that misses and Newell counters with a series of strikes. Liddell will be more careful next time no doubt. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Liddell throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Newell shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Liddell falls off balance throwing a combination
and Newell counters with a slapping leg kick. Liddell misses with a hook. Newell ducked under it nicely. A solid leg kick lands there for Newell.

Liddell looks gassed! Newell uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Liddell.

and Newell counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Newell's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Newell is working for a submission of some sort.
Newell stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Liddell to get to his feet. Liddell clinches but Newell breaks the clinch and Newell counters with a nice low kick that buckles Liddell's knee momentarily. Liddell slips a jab and a cross from Newell.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Newell scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Liddell misses with a series of wild punches.

Matthew Newell dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Newell changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Liddell looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. You can see the frustration on Liddell's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. A lull in the action here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Newell is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Liddell has escaped the position, nice work there. Newell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Liddell keeps working. Newell controls the position.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Matthew Newell just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Liddell closes the distance but Newell moves to the side and Newell counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Liddell is breathing heavily. Liddell swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Liddell shoots and misses and Newell counters with a low kick, right behind Liddell 's knee. Liddell clinches but Newell breaks the clinch and Newell counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Newell. Newell is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Newell passes Liddell's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Well, if Newell is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Liddell pushes Newell off looking to stand but Newell dives back in and keeps control.

Newell has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Newell trying to mount his opponent but Liddell defends it. Newell looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Newell tries to stand and escape but Liddell is controlling the position. Newell is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Matthew Newell just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Newell lands a high kick!
Liddell tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Liddell tries a head kick but it misses.
Newell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Liddell circles away quickly and effectively. Liddell throws a combination that misses and Newell makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Liddell really felt that one! Liddell showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Newell.

Newell shoots in for a double leg but Liddell sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Newell trying to pass the guard but Liddell defending well. Newell takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Newell decides to stand and escape the position. Liddell has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
